Log and Transfer Interviews

Hi and thanks in advance for any advice. I'm shooting my 1st big independent project on the 150 and have been importing lots of data through log and transfer of a series of 30 minute plus interviews. I've figured after filling my hard drive that I should have probably imported my clips in a more organized fashion cutting out the ~10-20% of what I know I'd never use footage to save precious hard drive space. Is there a way to cut select parts of my clips off my hard drive (not just from Final Cut Pro?). If I were to start over, what would one recommend as the best way to import/log and transfer interviews (I'm guessing mark clips with clear logging info and get rid of useless banter, refocuses, etc.-I keep the camera rolling throughout). Can I edit a project with FCP with my external drive which has all my interviews to save hard drive space?

Thanks for any help to this digital newbie!

Well, figured out how to log and transfer to my external hard drive. I would still be interested in hearing how people organize lots of interview footage though. Thanks!

Hi,

I'd recommend dropping the cash to have enough space to transcode everything. NLE's don't really like to transcode just parts of a clip, and honestly, I don't think the headache of managing that would be worth the space saved. For about $100 you can get an external hard drive that'll hold about 30 hours of transcoded footage. When you're done with the project you can nuke the files and re-use the drive, too.

I recently did a 15-minute web documentary shot over two weeks with 26 hours of footage from about 40 interviews and tons of b-roll. I spent a while looking on the internet for someone who'd documented a decent workflow - I needed something lightning quick, and none of the basic management tools in Premiere or FCP scale very well. In other words, they are excellent if you have less than about 50 clips. Much more than that and media management is a nightmare.

Here's my solution, which involved a seperate MS Access database and Excel spreadsheet. Really these two files were the cornerstone of my project management, since I could instantly find the best shot shot from a category and have it on my timeline seconds later. I'm happy to answer more questions about my workflow if you have specifics:
