Log and Transfer AVCHD to ProRes422 Gamma Shift/Color Problems

Hey guys,

I'm getting some high contrast/gamma compression after my Log and Transfer of the AVCHD files. Check out the color of the trees and overall gamma...

Is there a better transcoding process than Log and Transfer that someone could point me to? Maybe a thread on best transfer/export settings?

I feel like I'm losing a lot of color saturation and dynamic range because of this step!

Best,

Grant

I know you can use Toast 9/10 to transcode AVCHD just fine. FCP is much faster/easier in my experiene though. There should be some gamma settings to play with in the Prores settings in FCP??

You might want to give Cineform NeoScene a try (free trial). It's relatively fast at GH1 pull-down and transcode - and - it's deals with the gamma mapping perfectly. If you don't want to use cineform as your intermediary format (although it's excellent), it will also transcode into ProRes HQ.

Hi,

I used Neoscene to convert a short clip to ProRes and did the same with FCP.

Comparing the Neoscene in a Quicktime window side to side to the FCP window, there is a strong difference....

....but then, I just loaded the Neoscene clip into FCP and compared it to the FCP conversion both display by FCP. They looked absolutely identical (down to every pixel).

As I have seen before, the FCP "professional" preview does some very strange things. E.g. it softens all pixel when you zoom in - is there a way to switch that off? I want to see the actual pixel when in 800% mode an not super smooth mud. Same for the change in gamma/saturation/... - is there a way to switch that off?

Cheers
