so here are some frame grabs (colour graded) from a location recce.... i'm getting some brown blocking arround the rails where it goes to pitch black... anyone know how to get rid of it? i've only seen these once before about a year ago in some test footage... but they seem to show up in almost all the shots...

hmmm... i guess it's no so obvious on these stills... you have to see it in motion... it's insane... there are giant brown blocks that dance around the rails. but only on the pitch black areas... i'll post some zoomed in grabs that show it more clearly. on these it just looks like jpeg flaws.

i seem to have figured it out.. i just needed to apply a chroma filter and crush the blacks slightly and convert it from DV to a better codec... YAY!!! the raw footage still looks like crap though :( i might mess with the scene files later to see if i can get rid of it there

ok so here is a fixed grab. uprezzed to dvcproHD 720p. chroma filter fixed and what not :) also added some film grain to fill in the blacks with some texture

Is it me or does the first set of pics look cleaner?

Can you post some footage and offer some more details pertaining to what you did to fix the problem.

BTW, what NLE are you using?

The first ones are also smaller in size...

The corrected version looked a lot better.

I'm wondering what "chroma filter" did he use? Does he mean he desaturated the footage a bit?

hey. sorry for the late reply. i was waiting till i got my external HDD back off my friend so i could import the footage. but i only got it back yesterday. i've been playing with the footage all night :) it's now 8AM

i used a graeme nattress chroma filter. it's for FCP. which is what i edited it in.

the first pics are cleaner because i didn't ad film grain to them :)

oh and i've uploaded some clips from the recce to vimeo!!!

You gave me the idea for the adding grain trick and it works like a charm. I don't have the nattress filter and magic bullet doesn't have anything like that to my knowledge.

My workflow is ususally that I clean up any noise w/neatvideo, do a grading pass, then add a bit of grain.

I have no idea why the grain seems to get rid of the chroma noise; perhaps it's an illusion.

I love the look of the SGpro but my footage is almost always noisy after I do a bit of CC; but adding grain seems to compensate for it.

Thanks for the reply
