Location Exposure

I'm looking forward to hearing from folks with real world experience concerning the use of location monitors in conjunction with their HVX/HPX cameras not just for critical focus but to properly light and expose their scenes.

I no longer want to use my ON LOCATION (formerly DV RACK) software not only because of the inconvenience of it's inability to recognize my camera's native settings but also because of the inconvenience of lugging around my laptop.

So, has anybody ever used an HD/Standard def monitor just as a loose reference and relied solely on the HVX/HPX's waveform monitor to balance lighting levels with satisfactory results?

I ask because I used to solely rely on my DV RACK WYSIWYG monitor and was almost guaranteed that what I saw in that monitor was what I captured on tape.

Ive used quite a few different monitors on the set ranging from $800 ones to $3000 ones.. The only issues I've had with them you would have with a laptop. Like having trouble seeing them in the sun etc. But as far as the recording exactly what your seeing....as long as you spend some time tweaking the monitor settings and testing it you shouldn't have any issues. Now of course the kind of monior you get does make a big difference to the answer of your question.

Well, I knew it might come to that but I wondered if anybody ever used a monitor in conjunction with the camera's built in waveform monitor.
