Location Audio Recording Advice...

Hey,

What do the people who have shot their films out in the field recommend as far as recording sound goes? Obviously a boom with a shotgun mic is on the list, but would you feed that directly to one of the mic inputs of the DVX or run it to a DAT? Would you run both DAT and to tape? Just basically want peoples advice on what worked best for them.

Thanks,

Sean

I don't see any problem with redundant audio, specially with all the simple things that can go wrong with audio.

You'll get some great answers on this searching in the audio forum - in short a boom, mixer, variety of mics for different situations, proper wind protection, shockmounting, and possibly an external recorder will do you well. As for which ones and when thats when the searching comes in. Im just going through this as well - here's what will hopefully work for me:

AKG - SE300/CK93 Hyper/CK91 Cardioid (got CK91 used cheap, will be nice to have if I need it I suppose)
RODE - NTG1 Shotgun (already had it - if doing again I would go for a better mic)
K-Tek KSSM Shockmount
Rycote BBG for AKG, perhaps a windjammer too
K-Tek Zeppelin for NTG-1
Either K-Tek or Gitzo boom pole (still deciding)
SD-302 Mixer
Tascam HDP2 recorder
Countryman EMW Lavs
Sennheiser G2 Wireless setups
Sony 7506 headphones
Petrol Eargonizer Bag
A bunch of cables to make it all work
A bunch of batteries to make it all work - maybe a NP-1 setup, will depend on final budget.
Hard case to transport it all in. Portabraces are on special at BH, probably picking up a couple today.

All depends on what you want to do though. For post, a new set of monitors, an m-audio pre usb to feed them, and protools will be doing the work.
