local harley museum, d90/hmc150

did a video about a local harley museum. shot on d90 w/50mm 1.4 and hmc150 w/m2 adapter with 17-35 2.8. all the broll was with d90.

audio went to hmc150 using sennheiser ew100 g2 with countryman b6 mic. had to switch kits mid interview, my C channel pack started getting hard freq hits pretty much in all channels, so i switched to an A channel kit.

transcoded all of my d90 footage to proress 23.98 to match up with my hmc150, and for easier editing of course.

thanks!

and it was just me, the lonely "1 man band video journalist" as they call it i guess. i spent about 3 hours on production probably, a good 45 minutes was loading in and out, haha. i need an intern...

looks a little jerky and ghosty. Is that the encoding or the d90 interpretation? Looks good, I'm just wondering where these motion issues come from because I'm looking at getting a d5000 to go with my hmc. Do you have an original res file?

Looks good, really smooth and the sound is excellent. Really interesting, thanks. I like the zombie Harley at around .59

some of the shakyness from the dolly shots are from the little bumps in the floor. its that gray paint with chips mixed in it. i was hoping it wouldn't be too terrible, i see it a little bit too.

one thing i noticed, and tried to edit around was some of the broll from the d90 had orange banding horizontal lines in it. but it was very hard to see on the LCD and pretty much the same in the avi's and quicktimes. most of these shots were when i was shooting through plexi glass, so not sure if it was due to reflections from the flo lights in the room and their refresh rate.

this past weekend at a pga tournament i got to mess around with a 5d mk2. it was so much easier compared to my d90. yeah its more expensive but being able to dial in your exposure just by turning a wheel instead of pointing the camera all around makes a huge difference.

d90 going up for sale in a few weeks if anyone is interested.

I don't think the Canon does 24p but you might not care. Nikon D300s will be out soon you might wait a check that out too.
What do you mean by "pointing the camera all around"

24p isnt an issue for me. i usually shoot 30p, but only shoot projects at 24p when working with d90. to get proper exposure for d90 i have to point the cam at a light source, or near it, or away from it or partially cover the lens with my hand and then press the AE lock to get a nice exposure.

Great job! I enjoyed it very much! Nice smooth shots, great sound, perfect lighting, nice editing!!

But I did notice some oddness when we cut to the outside about 2/3 of the way through. If I recollect... you were shooting a bike with an American flag on it. The cars were jerking across the screen. Did you slow this footage down?

Also.. what lights did you use?

I recently put together a small taking heads promo clip .. just natural light. Here it is, if you're interested.

thanks david!

the cars jerking may have been from the cmos, not sure about that cause i didn't do any speed manipulation.

light wise, had a 500 watt tota stuck in medium softbox and then a 500 watt omni hitting the bikes from behind. i wish i would have had more time to light that a little better. a nice rim light and little more background light would have been nice.

that was a nice promo clip, like the use of the rack focuses. what did you use for audio?

maybe something is wrong with the camera? DO you have to hold your hand over the lens to get a good picture too?

Hey ManglerBMX

I thought your lighting was just fine as it was! And thanks for the lighting info.

I used the Zoom H4N for the audio with the built in mic. I just attached it to the end of a boom. It was a bit of a hassle not being able to see the levels while recording.. but it did the job ok (for what the piece was).

What did you use for audio?

d.

thanks david, glad you enjoyed it for what it was, haha!

audio on mine was countryman b6 taped under his collar pretty much at very bottom, wired to a sennheiser ew100 g2 wireless to my hmc150.
