Local 48hr film fest- "best of"

Went to a “best of” film festival showing last night. I did scut work on a film that didn’t make it, but it did raise my curiosity about the local indie scene.
The one thing in common in just about every one of the twelve films viewed last night was that the highlights were blown out. Some far worse then others but all were unacceptable to my eyes. All except a stop-animation film that actually looked pretty good.
They were shown at a popular indie theater downtown that is one of the hip hangouts for the artsy crowd. So I’m wondering- is it something to do with the projection on the big screen or is it just the indie scene people like to blow out the highlights?

Well if it is the projector that's pretty disappointing news. A lot of people putting in a lot of work and it looks like everything was back lit with mondo spots. Maybe they figure with a 48 hour turn around no one cares about the look....

Exactly with ddp as a DP I really dont like to do 48 hour film festivals. Sure they are fun but to me they run a risk of damaging your rep. If you dont have time to properly light a scene and the whole picture looks bad its just not good for you to get more work. I DPed a film festival that involved us shooting in 7 days and it was pretty intense trying to keep up with lighting.
