Hi:

Im new to Avid pro xpress HD. I am trying to capture 24p andvance photage using my sony handycam Dcr-hc32. My problem is i cant figure out how to make avid reconize my camera. maybe im going to the right spot to find a generic camera like mine. when i go to deck settings it says none available and wont list my camera(deck Configuration?). Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.

yes i tried adding a channel (firewire on No Port). Also i tried to add a deck. they did not have my camera listed so i tried several generics. what would be a quick way to tell if a generic is working because so far it wont log, capture or do anything with a generic.

thanks

I put it on OHCI but still no cummunication beetween my camera and Avid. It still says there is no deck. also my camera is not listed so im trying a generic. On the capture tool when i press the record button it says no tracks have been chosen. Also says no source tape selected. Under Capture tool there is a green circle with a dot in it that syas Ref lock. When i restart Avid without my camcorder plug in it says the deck configeruration does not match the decks attatced to the system; however, when my camera is powered on it does not give this message. I currently have Sony Vegas 6.0 and Premiere pro 1.5 on my computer and have not had a problem with capturing on them. If worse comes to worse is there a way to capture photage on another application and bring it onto avid.

thanks

OK, walk through these steps.

1. Without Avid open, connect your camera to your computer via Firewire and turn the camera on. Make sure that Windows recognizes it. Then open Avid.

2. Go to the Deck Configuration settings and make sure that the channel is Firewire on OHCI.

3. With that channel selected, click Add Deck and choose Generic DV Device (or something like that).

4. Click Apply.

5. Open the Capture tool (if you have a tape in the camera this will prompt Avid to ask for a Tape Name, go ahead and give it one). Generic device should be listed towards the bottom of the screen. At the top of the screen should be several buttons that say V1, A1, A2, etc. Make sure that V1, A1, A2, and TC are highlighted.

6. Press the Red record button in the top left of the screen.

This will either work, or give you a new error message that you can post.

As far as capturing in another program, as long as you export the footage as Quicktime then you can import those QT files into Avid.

I plugged in my camera and windows reconized it. Then i opened avid. Avid Automaticly puts my camera on Sony Dcr-Pc100 (My camera is a sony handycam Dcr-hc32), it offers me other camera models but none match my camera but i selected my camera as a Generic DV Basic Device-NTSC this time. When i open the capture tool there is a red message that says "Warning: only advanced pulldown is supported when capturing with 1394" which i dont follow and have used this same 1394 wire and has worked fine on my other editing programs. when i click Tape name on the tool bar it says the deck is empty, offline or turned off; however, its on and has a tape in it. Also on the capture tool on the buttom it says no deck. V1, A1, A2, and TC are highlighted, if i click them they say no input signal present. when i press the red record button it says "Exception: No tracks have been chosen. Please select at least one track." so i realy dont know whats going on. i gave the tape a name on the capture tool but that did nothing.

Krestofre, thanks for responding, helping me try to figure this out.

i am having the same issue right now - exactly the same but with a different camera - looking forward to a resolution

This is actually unrelated to your problem. That's just telling you that if the footage you recorded was with Normal pulldown (I.E. F5 on the DVX) then Xpress Pro isn't going to be able to capture it. Your version of Xpress Pro will only capture Advanced pulldown material (I.E. F6 on the DVX).

Speaking of Avid versions, what version are you using?

Does your Sony camera have a switch that changes from recording to playing? Like the camera must be in one setting to record and another setting to play out to TV? If so, make sure that it's on the play out setting (sometimes referred to as VTR mode, or play mode, or something like that). Having the camera in a record mode could cause Avid not to see it.

Generic DV Basic Device-NTSC is probably the best option for you with this camera. Keep that selected for now.

Let me know about that switch thing.

Chris

I have Avid Xpress Pro HD V5.0. yes the Sony camera has a switch for recording and playing. When i open up Avid I always put it in th Play/edit mode before i start the program. The photage on my camera was done in F6 24P advanced.

....and smelni thanks for sharing that information. It feels better to know im not the only one with this problem. If you figure out a solution to this problem please post it hear and i will do the same if i come across a solution.

I understand that avid cannot capture 24p normal - which i filmed in.

BUT - it can import those files and then remove the pulldown and display in a 24 frame timeline.

I just think its very odd that it can remove the pulldown on import but not capture. Silly in fact

Smelni, The newest version of Xpress Pro can capture 24p normal and remove Normal pulldown on the fly.

db20, I don't know what else to say, my friend, there are some cameras and or decks that just don't work with Avid regardless of the Generic deck template. That's why Avid has a list of supported hardware. Any chance you can get a hold of another playback device?

but in the capture window it says it can only capture advanced so i dont know why it can do it on the fly

I am using 5.0 - that isnt the newest - did you mean the newest full version?

Thanks krestofre for all your help. I probaly wont be able to get another camera until the end of winter break. For now i will keep on using Sony Vegas 6.0 or Premiere pro 1.5. My next project i am going to do will be with avid, i am looking foward to trying it.

You couldn't. Prior to Xpress Pro 5.2, the only way the software could take a 29.97 fps clip recoreded with normal pulldown and bring it into the system via firewire was with Mojo. However, software only could take a 29.97 fps clip recorded with ADVANCED pulldown and bring it in with pulldown removal via firewire. Xpress Pro 5.2 added the ability to remove Normal pulldown on the fly during capture over firewire without the need of a Mojo.

i understand what you are saying but I have just dragged in some files that were captured by dvrack in 24p normal. They imported no problem into avid in a 23.xx frame timeline - how is that happening - the pulldown must be happening.

The pulldown is likely happening incorrectly, as in Avid is applying Advanced Pulldown Removal to footage that contains Normal Pulldown.

again, while i beleive you, this seems very strange to me - since the file should be flagged as to which frames are which so for avid to blindly perform the import seems like very poor design to me.
