F3: lo rez proxy

I have a client requesting a file to be able to email back to their HQ at the end of the shoot for transcribing. is there a way to record a low rez proxy with something like the samurai? I didn't think it did a proxy but wanted to check first.

if it doesn't, anyone have any ideas?

thanks!

Well you might consider to use the internally recorded footage to internal SXS cards (35mbps) as your proxy, and the files to the Samuari 10-bit recorder as your high quality versions?

From my tests, the SDI will not trigger an external recorder anyway unless there is an SXS card inside the F3.

the samurai will definitely trigger without a card in the F3, I have tried it. was hoping for something really tiny, but it might have to be an audio recorder. too bad the zoom doesn't have time code!

I was testing with Hypderdeck Shuttle and no timecode was generated on the F3 unless it was actually recording to an internal SXS card.. I wonder what's different about how the Samurai gets triggered.

Are you talking about audio or video? I thought you were talking about video.... how you going to record video to an audio recorder?

Well, the easiest is to just have a recorder recording a super low rez proxy of video AND audio, but if I cant get that then audio is the next best thing. Not sure why the hyperdeck won't trigger. on the F3 I have the synchro mode (or whtever its called, its not in front of me) set to "i/f" and it triggers the samurai.

If it is a lock down shot on stix the whole time, just use the Firewire out to a Mac laptop and record a low rez Quicktime.

Re-encode footage on a field laptop with adobe media encoder or prelude seems like the best option in this case. I've shot all day and converted files in bulk to proxies in less than 30 mins. Naturally it depends on your computer hardware as to speediness. Blackmagic does make an h264 recorder too, but not sure how much smaller the files are going to be.

If there's a lot of footage, and that's likely from a day's shooting, why don't you use a field laptop to dub the recorded media from the camera's SxS cards or external recorder to a portable USB drive and Fedex that to the client's HQ overnight?

Cinedeck can do H264's in real-time. KiPro will do ProRes Proxy and DNxHD36.

Teradek Cube does wireless H264's and you can push them using LightIron server. Clients can actually do ALL kinds of things, such as review, notate, email, etc. right from their iPhone/iPad. (really slick workflow).

I like the look of the teradek. might have to look at that more closely! so in theory, it would be uploading to a website that a client could download on the other end shortly after?

The F3, F800, PMW-200, 160, 100 etc. can be configured to send an embedded trigger in the SDI signal to start/stop recording on a compatible device. It has nothing to do with timecode, and it works very well with Samurai. As ian515 says, it does not matter if there is a memory card onboard the camera or not.
