Live Video Mixing

Hi, I have gotten some request to do some event coverage. (Performance / awards ceremony)

I have two XF300 that I cover these events with, but never done it with live mixing. I wanted to know if there was a way to live mix.

I was thinking about something to hook to a computer so I can record in there and mix at the same time and get a live feed out to the projectors.

Any suggestions on this? Also, how powerful of a computer would I need to do this? Would I need a Laptop?

Thanks!~

The trouble with the computer route is that it means compromise - computers can in general only do one thing at once - so you can't for example do a slow crossfade, and while doing it select an effect - unless you have an external control device, which is expensive. Expensive too are the devices to get two video streams into the machine. On ebay you will often see things like Panasonic MX series mixers going for very little money - these have been mainstays of the corporate people for years and you just take composite video from your cameras into them - AND 3 monitors, one for each camera plus one for the programme output. Beware buying some lovely looking Grass Valley switchers you see on ebay dirt cheap - because they need all your input sources to be genlocked - and your cameras do not have genlock capability - so even though they look cheap compared with the huge new cost, they just won't work for you. The panasonics don't need gunlock.

Hi Paulears. Thanks for the reply. My father use to have one of the mx series but it started to fail a few years ago. Completely dead now. Would you still recommend something like the mx series still? Also, when you are talking about the external control device could you give me an example of one? Thanks!

@ceejay7777. I took a look at those. With the blackmagic it seems to be talking about internet streaming. Could I just output it through to the projectors instead?
