Live Uncorrected Concert Caps

Hey guys, first post here. These are grabs from my first outing with the DVX100A. I am very much an amateur, and the lights were not the best. Constantly changing, i imagine this environment is the hardest to get nice clean video. Most of the camera settings were default, all the Cine settings are on. This is a nice look at what pretty much anyone can do with this cam... and its in very low light.
Thanks, and keep posting guys, this cam is amazing.

They actually look quite good....the lighting works for it. My only issue is that a few are out of focus

Yeah, the last one is zoomed in quite a bit... and low light makes sharp focus tough. Also, i think the DVX100A has an auto focus issue in 24P mode, very slow. In this environment, manual focus is almost impossible. Also, these caps are from a DVD Mpeg2 encode, so some of the detail is lost in compression.
I had to get the caps from DVD, anyone know a program that has High-Res capping from raw video? WinDVD didn't let me cap from the raw AVI.

well, before the concert started, i'd soom all the way to the farthest object or maybe to and object on stage, focus, then zoom out. then when the concert started you'd have stuff in focus! auto focus is for noobs, no offense!

Since it is only processing 24 fps rather than 60, it takes a bit longer to autofocus, in 60i it will focus faster.....But then, it's 60i. Manually focusing is always better anyway.

Thanks for the responses guys...
If i was stationary, on a tripod or whatever, i would have done exactly that. Zoomed in, manually focused on... lets say... the drumset, and that would be that. But in this case, i was all over the place, close, far, on the side, and the band is a Metal band. They are never in the same place for any length of time... I made the decision to use auto focus for this situation, and still think it was the right one.
The video looks much cleaner than the stills. If i had more control of the situation, or more than one camera, i would have manually focused at least one of them.
I know having a $3000 Progressive camera with manual focus ring (a very nice one too), but using auto focus seems like a 'noob' move... but i made an educated decision based on the situation. Whatever. Live and Learn i guess.
Thanks again guys, no offense taken Justin, thanks for the input dude.

I'd have to say that they look pretty good considering the lighting conditions you were working with. Keep it up.

Hey man,
I dig the grabs. Colors look good. I have to disagree with the auto-focus "choice" though. I'd rather have some of my stuff out of focus, but have control over it, then have it out of focus without control. I just did a live video like this. Check it out here and let me know what you think.

Granted I didn't have to deal with the low-light issue, but focusing during a fast-paced live scenario is always difficult. I think it helped to use manual zoom....also burned me a couple times but overall I think it helped so I could quickly zoom in, get a closer focus, then zoom out. Cover the adjustment with a crowd shot and you're good to go. Keep it up!

HybridCreations, thanks for the response, im feelin' that video you did... and if that was all manual focus, wow, i will be trying it next show for sure. you can tell where the focusing took place, and it gave the video a more "MuchMusic" feel with the out of focus-in focus effect. Nice.
I will post some more in the future... i like the feedback, good or bad.

Hey MindShackle,
Thanks for the kind words. Yup, that was all manual focus. This was also my first time using my DVX on a shoot, so I think with a little more practice my focusing can get a lot faster/better. Like I said, I'd rather have control....especially with the slowness of the AF in 24p. I don't always like the out-of-focus/in-focus thing...I think it's a little cliche at this point. But in a live scenario like this, unless you have several cameras (which I did not) I think it's ok. I NEVER use AF though. It's the Devil's crutch...or something. Good luck.
