live show

I think you did a good job conveying the performance. you varied the camera angles thoughout. You showed a subtle restraint in the editing, which is good. there was a good pacing in the time between shot changes, which to me shows a confidence in your subject matter and yourself.

alot of people don't have the thought or control to let their shots speak for themselves and just "be". instead they just "cut cut cut" at a terribly confusing pace. it doesnt let the viewer get a real feel for what is going on.

dont get me wrong though, quickly cut shots have their time in place, but like any good thing they deserve moderation.

so, keep that up.

now for my constructive opinions for what I think could have been done better...

i, personally, would have liked to have seen more audience shots in the first half of the video. same with the behind the scenes stuff. it was nice, and I think you could have dwelled on it more.

lastly, i think you had the opportunity to, but didnt, do any sweeping pans from stage to crowd that would have looked very nice. at least I dont remember there being any. it would have created more variety and movement in your shots, instead of just cutting from the band to the audience and back again. would have tied the two together.

it is my personal opinion, especially when creating a reel that a band will use for promotions, to treat both the band and their audience as two distinctly important subject matter. it helps convey the "whole" band experience to a potential promoter, because what they care about is turnout.

also, did you think of getting coverage for more angles during another of the bands songs? I wasn't sure if you did that or not, but you could have "faked" more angles that way.

anyways, good job. I hope the band was pleased. good luck on your next shoot.

Thank-you so much for the response.

This was something I showed at a welcome home party. The band returned from the warped tour, and playing in the final of an international battle of the bands in germany. Many of the behind the scenes shots meant more to them than anyone else. It is in no way intended to be a promotional video.

I have learned that shooting live concert video is extremely hard to do, because you have no control over anything but you. It was fun to do and I wanted to share.

I learn from this site and thank anyone who can any provide feed back......good or bad.

Downloadin' it now... It's funny you mentioned that this band just got back from being on the warped tour. I put a similar type video together for my cousins band "The Real Deal" who also just got back from warped tour. Small world. (They did Montreal,Quebec City, and Ontario)

Cool video! Our stages over here weren't as nice as yours though
How did you manage to sync up them playing live to the previously recorded track? Was it crazy time-remapping? Or did you just guesstimate?

The music was hot as hell! Good job with the video. Would have liked to seen more of the crowd.

that was great, i especially liked the group off stage stuff, how many cameras did you shoot with, and many times did you film the same song to cut this from ?

great great video I love the colors in the concert. the two dvx´s was shooting in handheld, tripod, steadi?

congrats

Thanks for the feedback guys....

To match up the audio I pretty much guessed and matched it up the best I could. They are good friends of mine and I have seen them in concert a lot, so Im very familiar with the song. Knowing the band and the song makes it a lot easier.

I used two dvx-100a's and were both handheld.

It was shot at the velvet underground.....Atlanta's Hard Rock Cafe's venue.

This is all from one show and one song.

Looking back I would have a more crowd shots as well as more of the behind the scenes stuff. You live and you learn.

Thanks guys
