FS7: Live Session Videos with FS-7 .. any thoughts?

Hi all,

Just a quick n dirty shoot of two continuous-shot hand held live takes for a mates (rather good) new band in South London. First edit is with a grade of the band's choosing (quite a lot more contrasty/saturated that my own tastes), second edit is with an experimental 'active' treatment, using the waveform of the recorded stems to keyframe a tripped-out chromatic aberration-type effect using split channels, fractal noise/turbulent displace and a sidechained displacement matte to create the interference/combination.

Shot in custom w/out matrix, iso 4000 from memory, NR at mid. Lens used: Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC @2.8 w/ SB Ultra. Format: shot 23.976fps in true 4K, cropped to 1080 deliverable (even at 1080, AE took 6hrs to render out the 4mins of effects!). Some challenges with mixed flouro/tungsten lighting, but WB flouro and reduced yellow/green sat in the (1st) grade, although admittedly the skin tones have suffered slightly from this necessity.

Anyways, any thoughts appreciated. Posting this recognising that it's not everyone's cup of tea, especially with all the hard-line "cinematic-or-die" folks lurking in these parts, just cover your eyes and enjoy the music ;-).

"21st" (Normal grade): https://vimeo.com/138747277

"Years" (Tripped out grade): https://vimeo.com/138972339

Password fro both: myo

(Vimeo 1080 version still encoding at time of posting)

Also, the tripped out grade takes it up a notch (further!) post-2min. :-)

Cheers,

jason

If you're on a Mac get yourself VDMX and you'll be able to do all those audio driven distortion effects in the second video in RT and record it to disk. No need to wait 6 hrs!

Thanks man, VDMX looks like a handy bit of software, although from browsing the site and some of their examples, it doesn't look like it would be able to be customised to the same degree (or finesse, if that's not a ridiculous word given the context!), as the AE composition I was working in. My computers rarely busy overnight, so it probably enjoyed the outing! Definitely looks good for live-VJing stuff though, cheers.

I build live AV installations with VDMX, it's very capable and can use mattes and all the usual blend modes, optical flow and whatnot that AE does but in realtime. If you're making music videos it could be very useful for you.
