Live-feed using the DVX100A

Hi friends,

I have a question on whether my DVX100A can do some sort of a live-feed. As my DVX is shooting an event, whatever images are being recorded are conveyed real-time via a BNC cable to an LCD projector 50 feet away & the image projected unto a big screen.

From the connectors provided on my DVX, how do I connect the connectors & cables from my camera to the LCD projector so that real-time images are live-fed to the projector? I'm sure it's possible, but what are the technicals to do it. Thanks in advance.

Andrew

You have 3 real time output on the DVX:
Composite, S-video, Firewire.

For you pull I would recomend using the Composite output (Yellow RCA connector). Use a cheap RCA - BNC adapter and hook that up to a long BNC (coax (like RG-59)) run that goes into the composite input on the Projector. You might need another BNC - RCA adapter on the projector if it also has an RCA composite connector.

If possible, I would recomend placing some sort of video mixer (any one will work for this) between your camera and the projector so that you can fade or cut to black from your camera feed if wished. - as just pulling the cable from the camera will probabaly make the projector go funky (like throw up a nice bright blue with an error message).

Hello Mikko,

How are you? Well, that was a clear explaination on connecting live-feed to a projector. Unfortunately, I can't afford a mixer at this time because I'm still a struggling wedding videographer LOL :) Yep, with a mixer I can do some cool transitions with it.

My videographer friend reported back to me some time ago. He was using a DVX100A at a very large convention hall & his DVX was hooked to a mixer for live-feed to an LCD projector. The distance of the BNC cable between his DVX & the LCD projector was about 100 meters. Yet the real-time images did not suffer any form of loss in quality despite the long distance. He was surprised the image could hold up so well, because with his older 3CCD Panasonic camera, the image will degrade after only about 30 meters of BNC cabale.

Yeah, some gear, especialy cheap cameras, dont' send out a paticularly 'strong' video signal (meaning not to stnadard). But the biggest effect on tranmission quality/length/etc is the cable. A bunch of Cheap RCA cables barrelled together will suck. A nice length of good quality RG-59 will send it a long way.

I've sent Composite around 800m (~2600 feet, or half a mile.) with almost perfect image quality and only a ~10% drop in strength (brightness). That was down a bunch of loop-backed cabed pairs (so essentially a balanced signal) and a couple of 100m reels. Now that's definatly overkill for a lot of stuff, but it will do it. Hell, I can't get SDI to hold up even near to that far in that same cables!

Check e-bay for some super cheap video mixers. ANY mixer/fader unit will do a fade to black for you. http://cgi.ebay.com/Kramer-CVA-FM5-Video-Audio-Fader-Mixer_W0QQitemZ7615800884QQcategoryZ21169QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem is all you need next to yrou camera so you can reach over and fade.
