Live events with where P2 storage is now

If my financing goes through, I plan on getting two of these sweet cameras with the 2 8GB P2 cards package.
So far it seems as far a reliability is concerned (certainly not cost effectiveness) that having 2 cards and a "offload" drive on site is the best way to go.

I plan on making films with these just like everyone else and their uncle, but I want to do event videography on the side to bring in an income to justify the cost of this equipment.
I would really like to market the fact that my company operates in HD at an affordable price especially in the wedding videography arena. With the 8GB cards I heard that you could get 20 minutes out of one in 720p, meaning you could get 40 minutes with 2.
The only part of shooting for a wedding is if the ceremony goes over 40 minutes. Is it possible to shoot 20 minutes off the first card then the camera goes over to the second card, while shooting on that 20 minute increment, download the first card so by the time the second card is used up, you have another 20 minutes of time?

If this is true, obviously 720p is more feasible for live event for right now, while 1080p will be for preplanned shootings until the P2 storage gets higher.

Does this sound feasible?

Yes, this is exactly possible, and in fact doing it this way you could effectively record one continuous take for hours and hours.

But, keep in mind that when you say "20 minutes per card in 720 mode", that's for 720/24p. If you're shooting 720/30p, it's more like 16 minutes, and if you're shooting 720/60p (for the "reality" look) then it's back to 8 minutes.

There will also be products from FireStore (and hopefully others too) that will allow for multiple hours of recording to a hard disk.

Thanks Barry. I always respect your input. But haven't I been reading that the P2 cards are going to be more reliable than a HDD recorder.
I know as far as capacity and cost effectiveness that P2 isn't there....yet, but I don't want to risk paying clients' footage. I would rather drop the money for the reliablity.

I don't do weddings, althow I would gladly accept if I got the offer. I think that if/when I got/get married, I would/will want to have it shot at 24fps.
It seems that these professional grade iPods would be pretty reliable though, and should be getting even better rather quickly. There is a chance that you might trip or something and not get the second P2 card to the camera back in time. This really shouldn't won't be very likely, since there should be plenty of time if you are shooting 720 at 24. However, if you are shooting a weeding you might not want a guy running back and forth from the camera operator to the laptop in the middle of the ceremony. Say you are using both cameras for the weddings... then you'll need either two assistants and two laptops, or an athlete that knows how to use a computer.

Hi,

Dreaming for a sec here...

Isn't it awesome to think, based on the P2 roadmap, that we'll be having 80 minute loads of 720p24 by this time next year? And, nearly three hours in two years? That's incredible for a handheld camera, especially in HiDef. And, to think... Two years isn't even THAT far away!

Plus, capacity only goes up from there. This excites me very much! Smiles. :)

Is that based on the up and comming SD chip release dates? What capacity P2 cards are the 80min. and 3hs. based on...? (What SD chips sizes are those?)

By the way... YES!!!! It is awesome...

The current 4gb cards are made from 1gb SD cards.

The upcoming 8gb P2 cards will be made from 2gb SD cards.

Sandisk or someone has already announced 4gb SD cards, which will get us to 16gb P2 cards rather soon. Two 16gb cards would give you 80 minutes of runtime at 720/24p.
