live chromakey software for AF100???

Does anyone know if there's a live chromakey program out there like Veescope but for the AF100.

Unfortunately, the AF100 doesn't have firewire. But is there another live chromakey program that doesn't require a firewire connection that would allow me to optimize my green screen shooting with my AF100???

A switcher with built in keyer would work

Is it not possible to use a normal key screen BG and shoot it "traditionally".

You seem to be having an aweful lot of unnecessary issues with the Reflecmedia device and your workflow.

I could not download your test files BTW how big are they? I couldnt open the dropbox at all.

Hi Shooter, thanks for following up. Well I can try it, but the problem is the room isn't that big and my traditional collapsible green screen is only 7' x 7', but I'll try anything at this stage. I don't want to give up on this. Determined to get it right.

Sorry about those files. They're Apple Pro Res HQ, maybe I should have recorded them aas Pro Res. One file is 680MB the other is 1.5GB.
I'll try to see what's going on with them or try posting them instead on my me.com public folder. Were you able to see the photos of my Reflecmedia setup? If so, would you recommend any changes from what you've seen? Thanks again very much for your help.

I have never used Reflecmedia but I did see your photos.

I have done thousands of keys the traditional way and although I can understand the thinking behind Reflecmedia..it isnt something I would do ...ever. So I dont know how to offer advice

BTW: Why cant you do your shoot in a place with more space? ie a studio.

Also: If you want someone to test a file..I suggest a quick blip (2 -3 second roll) on the camera for a file of maybe 30-50MB.

Hi Shooter,

Thanks again. Well, I'm trying to do this at home. I will try to do it the conventional way. Just one question. What kind of lights would you advise using for green screen? As you saw, I have 3 Litepanel 1x1s. But do you think these lights aren't appropriate for green screen? Should I instead be using those long Kinoflo 4 bank lights?

That space will be an issue for a normal key screen shoot so I guess you are stuck with the Reflecmedia.

FWIW...for a small green screen key shoot I use 4 ft Kinos with green tubes for the BG.

You will get far too much spill and bounce to be able to deal with that in your home space.

BTW: The Reflecmedia system must work as advertised ( and claimed) and I am surprised users have not popped up with advice on it. Have you asked elsewhere?

We've shot hundreds of videos with the Reflectmedia green screen. It produces a very nice green and its super simple to key. Plus you do not have to light for the green screen. Makes lighting your subject much easier. Also, unlike the traditional green screen, you actually want your subject about 1 ft or less from the green screen, this will reduce and shadow that is created from the light ring.

Nick- is the lack of space at home preventing you from getting separation between the subject and screen, or preventing you from using the 7x7 screen?

And how wide do you want your shot with a real (breathing) subject?
Because you don't need to fill the frame with green screen, you can crop the edges (beyond the green screen) out- I'm not sure if you realize this.

Just curious: How do you light someone that is less than 1 foot away from a BG ?

I would be interested to see what can be achieved with the Reflecmedia.

Anyway...Nicholas.... sounds like you should be talking to little bobby and picking his brains on the subject.

Unless I am wrong Reflecmedia is based on the ring light around the lens that is either green or blue LED's. Then the backdrop is gray with glass crystals embeded to reflect the light back to the camera. You use the ring light with a dimmer to set the light to the right intensity to get a good keyable BG. And you light the subject any way you like, but a little off axis. The weird thing is the BG looks gray to the eyes but blue/green in the camera or if you look through the ring w/o the camera. And the talent can be 6" in front of the screen, no spill.

I used this setup to set up a mockup for a weather forcasting exhibit in a weather museum 14 years ago it was then owned by a company now out of business but bought by the BBC I believe but I have not heard much about it since. It worked very well for a cheap setup and we used a very inexpensive switcher Videonix I believe to run the exhibit. The scary thing is it is still running and kids love it. The only thing we have had to do is replace bulbs in the key and fill lights for the talent the ring light on the camera still works as does the $500.00 switcher and the Hi8 camera. Granted the key is not the greatest but for 14 year old tech it is great. The kids can be the forecaster and in the end they get buried in snow from a Piston Bully clearing 10' of snow off the auto road on Mt Washington.

Thanks again everybody. OK I just uploaded my most recent test shot with my AF100, using Reflecmedia, and my Atomos Samurai:

Chromakeyed in After Effects Keylight. Please download the full version, only 3 seconds long, 19MB. As you can see the buzzing artefacts, noise around top of the mannequin's head remains the major problem. It seems that no matter what settings I try in Keylight, I can never get rid of the noise that appears as soon as I apply any chromakey to my green screen.

Little bobby, I wish I knew the correct way to use the Reflecmedia. It seems like a no brainer, and everyone is getting great results with it except me. I feel like the dumbest person on Earth. It has to be multiple things I'm still doing wrong.

Post the original footage as well, please.

Have you tried with just a normal greenscreen? Or a piece of green card / cloth / whatever...

That should at least help you eliminate the possibilities?

Hi groveChuck, yes, that was the main reason I bought the Chromaflex, due to lack of space and for portability. Especially after I had seen all the great results people were getting with it. I would really only be using this for interviews, medium close ups. Nothing further. I tried using garbage mattes by just drawing the matte around the subject, but it didn't help me with the noise that keeps popping up as soon as I apply the key.

To test your footage...people would need the source footage.

Not something you have scaled, encoded ( compressed) and posted to Vimeo.

Too many variables in that.

Anyyway - looking at your unkeyed vimeo footage...I would expect to pull a perfect key from that. Its fine.

Hi shooter, will repost full size. What web site would you suggest I upload to? Since Dropbox and me.com seem to be giving people too many problems for downloading.

How large is the file?

Put it on YouSendit ( to your self) then PM me and any others interested ...with the link.
