Live Audio Mixing

How do I go about mixing my audio live as the video is playing back for example if I am editing an interview and I need to pot down the audio at the end of the clip quickly before they go into the next thought? I know how to use the "rubber bands" or Audio Keyframes as some may call it. Just wondering if there was a way to adjust the audio while it is playing back instead of adjusting from a stopped position then playing it back to see if I like it.

Another Audio question....

If I unlink the audio from the video in the event I needed to edit out something in the audio track, I can cut that audio clip in half and remove a section of it just like I would for a video clip right? Of course, I would have to readjust the clip so it matches up with the video clip.

Re: Live Audio Mixing

As for your first question, I've personally never come across a way to mix on the fly as you watch. That would be unbelieveable and extremely fast, but I don't think FC4 is equipped for something like that.(someone may come on here and make me look like an idiot by having an answer though). For fairly quick fade outs or decrease in volume, I click on the box on the timeline that looks like a jagged line(clicking this you should all of a sudden have a pinkish line on each audio track and a black line on the video track. Click on the pen option on the tool bar. Where you want the audio to start to fade out put a pen mark(it should automatically go on both audios if they are linked). Then a pen mark where it will end, then merely pull down the last pen mark to nothing. A quick fade out of sound or music.

As for the second question, just make sure the video clip is locked, then do what you want to the audio.

Re: Live Audio Mixing

ppro can do realtime automation recording. it has a read automation function which allows you to select which audio track(s) youll be reading from, and then when you play the timeline back in realtime, you can adjust any parameters of the audio track using the mixer window, and such, and its records your movement, and stores it as changeable spline(or other method of interpolation at your choice) based or  keyframes for each effect or parameter you were meesing with.automating the adjustments when you play the timeline back in the future. ..im really suprised fcp cant do that as well
its a standard feature of any proffesional hardware mixing board as well.

Re: Live Audio Mixing

I was sure the latest version of FCP had some sort of automation, and a quick 'n simple trip to apples site revealed this...

"Fader automation lets editors mix their audio in real-time. Fader automation can be recorded in three ways — with all keyframes, with reduced keyframes or as peaks only. In an industry first on a professional NLE, recording with reduced, or thinned keyframes, happens in real-time."

Here's the URL: Fader automation lets editors mix their audio in real-time. Fader automation can be recorded in three ways — with all keyframes, with reduced keyframes or as peaks only. In an industry first on a professional NLE, recording with reduced, or thinned keyframes, happens in real-time.

Hehe, funny what a visit to the product's own information page can reveal!  ;)

Re: Live Audio Mixing

I actually remember reading that in the book as well but I just didn't know how to go about actually doing it. I have noticed that the book is funny like that...will tell you that FCP can perform a certain operation but doesn't tell you how to do it.

Re: Live Audio Mixing

As far as your splicing the audio out from or into a clip, yes. I recently edited a wedding video for a friend with some footage that someone else shot. In the cutting of the cake scene, some idiot off camera is going "Sheesh do they have to take so long doing this, I'm ready to get outta this crappy place.." and other comments like that add nauseum. I was able to delete the audio from the middle of that scene and splice in some crowd noise from another cake crowd shot.
