Little Hudson Grabs

J.R. Hudson

Spirit Animal
No pending project; obsessed with 'Light & Dark' lately and shooting as much as possible.  This is my son (future filmmaker of course).  Getting him to actually sit still is an achievement in itself.

Just sharing with the community.  Love the one on the left; the one on the right is missing something though...

Forgot to add. The one one the right I think is missing detail. The one one left you can see your son's left eye even though its in the shadows. Where the one on the right his right eye is completely unseen.

Re: Little Hudson Grabs

I think you are right about that.  Thanks for pointing that out.  He also sat forward on the one on the left whereas the chair is where the focus was (him sitting back).  But the pose was right on; just coming into my plane of focus; can't sit still.

Something else I just noticed; on the left, his nose shadow is falling where it should (shadow should angle towards the top of the left side of his mouth) whereas the right is just too damn strong and at a right angle.

Re: Little Hudson Grabs

You got a cute son, reminds me of my nephew, only older. I agree the first is the best. I just has that elusive "cinematic" quality with him pouring out of the frame. The other looks like something I would shoot ;D

That would be fill, John. :P

I think a piece of white foamboard from Staples would work nicely in this case. Either that or reposition the light so you get a bit more spill on the other side of the face. Right now he looks like the Frank Gorshen character on the original Star Trek Series. Handsome kid though, takes after his mother?

LOL

Yes; fill would be key on that right one and I think rasing that light up. You know; funny thing is; he is a clone of me; everyone says "Oh yeah, thats John's son." But my wife took my features and softened them up. I am more, uh, rough looking? :-/ He get's the looks from y wife for sure.

Re: Little Hudson Grabs

nice grabs. cute kid john. the left one his expression and pose is more interesting. i think id get same feeling from the one on the right if he was in the same position and looking at the camera, only the lighting would be a bit more dramatic.

Re: Little Hudson Grabs

You know who your son looks like? (Maybe he looks like you, I don't know, never seen you before.) He looks like the kid in TC's avatar. Which works perfectly. Your avatar is talking to TC's avatar in Pulp Fiction. You should try and recreate that scene with your son listening intently. ;)

Re: Little Hudson Grabs

I also think the one on the right is the most 'cinematic' - it's kinda noir-esque, without being too obvious.

How do you make Little Hudsons? Is it like a gremlin, where you just multiply in water...? (don't let them anywhere near water...!) :D

Re: Little Hudson Grabs

Andy, you start with a Mrs. Hudson and a bottle of Tequila.....

I agree with the cinematic feel of the pic on the right, I'm not suggesting the image be flattened with light, but some soft fill from a bounce card would still leave the left side of the face in shadows while allowing for some expression.

I love Chiaroscuro and spent six hours on Sunday lighting a dining room table scene to achieve that effect, but I think of it more as layers of light, operating at different intensities and qualities that together create a sense of tremendous depth. Just a little fill on the front left side of the kids face, leaving the back side and the chair alone would add to that, in my opinion.

Re: Little Hudson Grabs

Like the pics, John. The one on the right would look better if your son's face was more "intense," so the lighting would fit the mood better. But for a test, I think it looks great.

Re: Little Hudson Grabs

Very nice pics John. :)

I think your son will be shooting professional looking horrors by Jr. High ;D
