Little DARling Distributed Audio Recorder from JuicedLink now in stock

Bit of a bummer that sadly the discount for buying multiple units is only applicable to the more expensive DAR124RX01.
Unfortunately there is no discount available at all for the standard DAR123 model :-(

So how does the Juciedlink DAR123 compared head to head with the Tascam DR-10CS for the same price, what is the pros and cons of each??

What standard lavs will this NOT work with?

I am looking to picking one of these up - either the Tascam or DAR123. The interface on the DAR123 is worrisom for me. I read about the lower bit sample of the DAR and how it doesn't really matter for dialog, but what if it wasn't dialog? And bunch of other niggles about the DAR123, but I REALLY want to know which one has better low noise preamps only if it is a considerable difference. That might sway me.

I have a Tascam Dr 10 CS and would also like to hear a comparison. I hope Robert does one of his tests.

I also have one of those aspen mics and did a comparison test with a Cos 11 lav with the Tascam. The Aspen was noisier. You get what you pay for.

Have compared your Tascam Dr 10 CS with something like a Zoom H1?

Great discussion!

The methodology for the Audio Engineering Society paper by Meyer and Moran was to have the subjects listen to high-fidelity music, and change the bitrate to see if they could perceive a difference.

This video clip compares the signal-to-noise of the Little DARling to the Sound Devices 702, using the lowest noise lav that I am aware of (Sanken COS-11D):

BTW, the SD702 was set to 24b/96KHz for that recording.

The Little DARling is designed to be used with a lav mic, worn by talent. I occasionally sprinkle it around more liberally, to pick up ambient (I'll mic up the jumps at my daughters horse shows, to hear the grunting of the its breathing and the pounding of its hoofs on its approach to the rails).

If you are going to record a symphony, the Little DARling is not the right tool. You would want to use a condenser mic with a larger diaphragm than a lav, which will provide much lower noise than even the Sanken COS-11D. So, you would choose a recorder with balanced XLR inputs with phantom power (as the lowest noise mics typically run from phantom) and a good low-noise front end on the recorder. That's not what the Little DARling was designed for ...

Thank you for your understanding ...

Used a LittleDARling today and it's great... With one caveat: It doesn't work with my Sony lav mics. The connector on the mic doesn't line up with the receiver and so it only works if pulled half way out. My Sennheiser lavs work great. Unfortunate, however, since I prefer (and have several) of the Sonys.

Ryan,

That's great!

I've tested the LD with various lav mics, but not any of the sonys.

What model Sony Lav?

Regarding the locking 3.5mm jack itself, this is the same jack that is used on the BMC388 (with 3 instances). The BMC388 has been shipping a couple of years now, with interfacing to various 3.5mm plugs used by customers, and we've never had a complaint about mating.

The Little DARling provides plug-in power on both the ring and tip, and pulls the audio from the tip.

I found this thread on CC. It's possible Sony uses a different pin-out (?):

It would just be so odd if they did that. Also, if they sent the audio down the ring, then it certainly would not mate with the Little DARling tip when you have the plug pulled half way out.

Maybe, you can send me one of your Sony Lavs, and I can try to see what they've done? If you're interested, please contact me on my website via email, and we can discuss shipping, etc ...

I wish this product was set up as a plug-on (never say buttplug) like the DR10x. A phantom model for more money would be great. if you want to remote the mic from the recorder a cable can be used. Both these products offer useful features, and as an alternative to wireless, could be a good option.

As it is, it creates a useful option for my mostly retired AT897 which has battery power in lieu of phantom supplied externally.

I guess no one has figured out how to get the Little Darling to output audio when recording? Yes I read the posts that say Z hold a patent that prevents this from happening or a device capable of this from being sold in the USA. However I don't live in the USA.
Cheers

The connector is 3.5mm for Sennheiser Tx's, but I wonder if a 3.5mm to TA5F will enable use of Lectro Tx/Rx systems with this cable...
The specs state it's for a (stereo) 1/8" output. So no, it would probably not work without modification. The Sennheiser 100 series portable transmitter/receivers use a different wiring config.
