Hi guys new to the forum. recently finished shooting documentary on carnival in my my island and now im dumping footage in premiere for edit.
i am noticing lines on the footage especially when the subjects move or i pan or tilt, the image distorts with lines.
this is the setttings on the camera.
scene file F5:24p
syncro scan 1/48.0
aspect conv letterbox

i inputed the fottage into premiere using these settings
dv 24p 23.976 fps
16:9 widescreen.

can anyone tell me why i am getting these lines in the footage?

Your project should be in 4:3 instead of 16:9 as the letterbox setting is masking a 4:3 image with black bars to look like 16:9.

I'm not sure how it works in premier, but in most programs, you need to capture at 29.97fps no matter what, except for some very specific rates like HDV 24F. 24p is recorded in a 60i stream.
Also, don't shoot in letterbox, squeeze is the way to go, hands down. Based on what I've read, the DV codec allocates compression to specific areas of the video, meaning that you won't actually get the full 25 mbps within the image. A substantial amount of data will be just the black bars. Squeeze still throws out a quarter of the resolution, but the image fills the frame.

Buck is right, you didn't shoot 16:9 footage like you thought. You shot "Letterbox", letterbox is the same thing as regular 4:3 footage, all letterbox does is put black bars on the top and bottom making the image appear 16:9, but the footage is indeed 4:3. So you need to capture your footage in 4:3 not 16:9.

Moseph is also right about the capture frame rate. you should be capturing at 29.97fps not 24. even though you filmed at 24fps the tape is still being recorded as a 60i stream. Not sure about Premiere either, but i think that you will have to do some sort of pull down to get the footage into 24fps on your 24p timeline (if you are editing on a 24p timeline, if its 29.97, then no worries)

in premiere just drag and drop ur 24pa or 24p footage on a 24p timeline and ur good to go. Shoot squeeze, detail freq thin and drop on a 24p widescreen timeline and preimier will do the rest. it automatically removes the pulldown and unsqueezes the footage. if its not removing pulldown the right click the footage in the project window and click interpret footage and u'll see a box that says remove pulldown.

I'm currently having probs getting rid of lines in my 24p footage in after effects but thats naother story.

hi. im new here. but regarding to this footage line problem its not a big deal. u can just remove the line by selecting the footage and go to premier tool bar edit-remove flicker if im not mistaken. if the remove flicker option is not in the edit tool menu, then try to look around for it. u'll definitely will find it and when its done, then your problem solve.
hopefully it helps.
