Line vs Mic

Hi All,

Just looking to optimise the audio recording on my AF101. We use Sennheiser K6 mics with a Sennheiser G2 radio transmitter system.

At the moment I am putting the output of the radio receiver into the XLR of the camera set to MIC, and with -30 dB of gain on the output of the receiver.

I've heard it suggested that it would be better to put it into LINE, and get rid of the -30 dB gain.

I know on general principles that it is better to work with higher signals where you can, depending on where the noise sources are. Can anyone explain to me what the exact difference between the line and mic settings on the camera is? Is it getting rid of a pre-amp stage? I can see how getting rid of that removes a potential noise source, after all, why attenuate a signal you are just going to boost again afterwards.

I'll run some experiments myself to see what works, but would like a better understanding which settings ought to be better in theory. I've been blindly going with the -30 dB/Mic option since the days of my DVX100!

Just trying to make best use of what I already have in the storeroom! Any update to audio kit will have to wait until the camera/lenses are paid off :) (I know I might be able to get cleaner audio using cables instead of radio but that's not an appealing option for practical production reasons, incidentally).

Cheers, Hywel.
