GH2 Lilliput and the like - does HDMI input matter?

I'm looking at an aux monitor for future rig use, and I've been wondering, with the screens like the Lilliput and some others that display only 800x600, does it matter that you don't have HDMI input? I mean if you input RGB via the HDMI output, will it be that much worse? I don't know enough about this.

I am not sure what you're asking. Are you asking should you buy a lilliput or a regular external video cable monitor?

If so, having a lilliput and with the GH2 poor quality HDMI out, I don't know if you'd witness too much difference from normal audio video or hdmi. But if you're buying an external screen, after you buy the hdmi-to-svga converter cable, the non-hdmi monitor, and the batteries... You'll be near the lilliput price that comes with some of those items.

The output on the GH2 isn't poor quality.

I had a night's rest, let me try and explain again, or rather ask a few questions first.

The Lilliput 7" has a screen resolution of 800x480 - it is not an HD screen. Am I understanding that bit?

The same is said for the 5" version.

So, given that (and please understand I am merely entertaining the thought of purchasing locally instead of via ebay again - which might happen anyway), why buy an HDMI input field monitor if you could buy a "field monitor" that takes VGA or RGB?

Some small technical things still evade me hence please feel free to tell me I'm an idiot :banned:

i own a lilliput 668GL, and tested the difference between ypbpr, hdmi and normal AV-Input... there is no difference in between hdmi and ypbpr (why should there be one...) but you will definitely see a decrease in quality if you connect one of your "Playstation Cables" to this monitor...

regards Stefan

@ stefanhuberfilms Thanks for the input. I was just wondering. How are you finding the screen? I'm looking at the 5" for shoulder work in a cage/shoulder rig I'm designing for my GH2.

If you stretch PAL ot even NTSC signals up to a higher resolution display (as in your 800x480), it´ll soften the picture.
If on the other hand your signal gets scaled down from HDTV, if anything it´ll get sharper.

The GH2´s hdmi out is not at all bad quality. There were some issues with its container/cadence/fps for recording the hdmi stream externally, but even those seem to have been figured out.

I don't know the 5 inch one, but if you need a monitor for focusing it should be just fine... the colors are good but the contrast isn't the best, its a cheap monitor so don't expect marshall's quality... for framing and focusing its a great deal but do not rely on the colors, compare with the gh2's inbuilt screen before hitting the record button... thats my experience with an hvx and a 7D...

@ Stefanhuberfilm Thanks for the mini review. I read about the color bit, however, as you mention, my intention was for focussing, I find the small screen even the EVF just a tad bit difficult to determine focusing. Yeah, the Marshalls et al. is a bit over my price range at this point in time anyway.

All the best

I have the Lilliput 7" 5d-II model that is the newer version with focus peaking, 1:1 pixel mapping, false colors, a 1280x800 screen and hdmi in. The color reproduction is very good, but the main thing is that focusing is immensly easier with said features. If you can afford a $300 monitor for your rig, I would absolutely do it. If you can't, and as you said, this is for a future rig, I would advocate waiting till you can afford it. The upgrade from my older 800x600 5" is night and day.

@ Blazerr003 Interesting. I'd rather go for the newer version then, only thing that bothers me is the physical size on a shoulder rig. I'll have to make a few cardboard cut-outs when I start building my shoulder rig to see how the physical size plays with the rig. Thank you so much for your input blazer. Appreciated.
