Lilliput + 7D = Aspect Ratio problems?

Any 7D owners using the Lilliput 669 7" monitor? Have you had any issues with getting correct aspect ratio in live view and playback?

When in live view, best I get (after removing info) is a good image that is slightly vertically stretched with those small black bars on the left and right. In playback, I get a full screen with no black bars (it fills the lilliput's screen) and the image looks a even more vertically stretched. Now take note, the image is close to correct, but just isn't quite, so it has nothing to do with switching between 4:3 and 16:9 on the lilliput. The image is subtly off....to a degree that it may escape many other users.

Any ideas?

With HDMI output, right?

I decided I'm not using HDMI at all with my 5D based on these weird issues.

The only normal monitor image I get is with playback. In record, the image is distorted. In pause it's a 16:9 image inside a 4:3 box.

And then there's the 5 second delay after pressing record...

Yeah, HDMI. It seems like the 7D doesn't have all the same quirks as the 5D, but I wonder if this particular lilliput model has issues. I haven't heard about this being widespread with people using the smallHD and Marshall monitors...

So how do you intend to focus and shoot with your 5d

It is my impression that the 7 is faster and this is a real world super bonus of the 7

I have not tested that side to side

(I use a SmallHD BTW)

I intend to use an onboard 7" LCD with an SD picture unless I'm not providing a 2nd monitor at the same time, and then I'd possibly just use the camera LCD with or without a hoodloupe.

The 5 second delay with HDMI out won't work for me on a job - AT ALL, nor will the strange aspect ratio distortion ever work for me, nor will investing another grand in a 7" monitor.

As it is, I ruled out the 7D in favor of the larger image sensor.

Being a cheap monitor, I suspect there's some technical shortcoming as it seems a lot of people are using the DVI input for this model:

I think I may be running into the foremost shortcoming. Unless I figure it out, the aspect ratio distortion is pretty bad compromise to be making. I don't know if people simply haven't gotten enough of these and the few that have seem to think things "look fine?"

I did figure out that in HDMI mode on the 669 model, you can switch between "DVD" and "PC" modes. All that does though is take the vertically stretched image (or horizontally squished image) and scale it down a little more, revealing more of the live view with more grayed out area on the top and bottom and some more width to the blank black bars on the left and right.

I think this may have something to do with the irregular dimensions of 800x480. Proper 16:9 would be 854x480 right?

I don't see a DVD/PC mode, just AV/PC mode and mine won't even show an image in PC mode while being fed HDMI.

I can, however, switch to 4:3 if I want to get a normal aspect ratio while recording, but the screen goes black for like 20 seconds switching from 16:9 into 4:3 while in record mode.

854x480, I dunno. I'm gonna see if I can live with SD monitoring until I decide if this is even worthwhile for shooting footage in the first place. I'd be kind of fine with just having the camera LCD and an SD output, but even good SD is ok.

When using HDMI, press the menu button and once the menu is showing, hold the menu button down until screen goes dark and release. Apparently that is switching between DVD and PC modes. I tried it with DVI and didn't change so I think there is only 1 setting there. I'm not a fan of DVI mode because instead of being vertically stretched, its vertically squished.

Yeah, I mostly got this just so I wouldn't have to crane my neck or kneel, etc...while filming in tight spaces or well, anywhere really. HD wasn't as big a deal as just having a decent screen that could angle in any direction. It will work fine, but I'm somewhat turned off if the aspect thing will never be right. Drives me nuts. :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

Anybody experiencing correct aspect ratio display (over or under scanned) with any of the Lilliput monitor 7" & 8" variants?
