Lights of Firestore?

Goodness gracious, I've been given such a choice.

My rich as HELL uncle says "Li'l joey...I'm gonna spend X amount of dollars on your christmas gift this year."

X = the amount of a FS-4 system.

Now, I'm not sure about the FS-4 vs. $800 of other gear (I need a good light kit too...)

So let's role play for a second.

You're me. You've got a 100b, an oktava audio setup, home depot worklights, PPro 1.5, and a bogen tripod system. and an $800 dollar check

It might seem obvious what to replace, but I'd appreciate input, maybe brand suggestions.

Happy holidays, all

Actually if it were me I would go with the firestore. I dont know about you but for me it is harder to save money for more expensive things, and from what I have seen you can get some nice lights for cheaper than that, so you get the firestore now and the lights when you save up your money. I guess it depends on how you view the $800. Its alot for me so I would go for something big.

A firestore is a great thing to have.

But if you are fine shooting to tape then i'm going to toss my lot in with pookie and mark. Get yourself a good light kit. In a firestore vs. lighting situation i think the firestore is excessive. Good lighting is a necessity.

I've always been partial to Lowell myself.

This is a good starter kit in your price range. But look around a little more. Try to sniff out a deal.

the briteks from Rostronics are a good deal. I have a bunch. Little flimsy at the pivots and such, but they do the trick and aren't too heavy. A small kit of these and various chinese lanterns can do very nicely in small areas. Personally I think the light from chinese lanterns is overlooks a lot. Of course it depends on what you're shooting.

that said, i'd say get another credit card, buy a few more lights and a firestore. ;)

Firestore saves a lot of time from not having to capture from tape. If you're doing shorts and features, you probably wouldn't be capturing all the time, so spend your money on the lights.

The Briteks are great, but you can always get some of those later on for pretty cheap. I'd spend that $800 on a couple of really nice Arri 650 fresnels that will last you a lifetime.

Any gear will last as long as you take care of it. I'm really anal about babying my stuff so the Briteks are great for me. If you are working with a bunch of dumbasses that don't give a S*$t about your gear.... then the Arri's are the way to go. They are built like tanks.
Of course if I spent the money on a set of Arri's and saw someone abusing them I'd probably have an aneurism or kill somebody....
