I am looking for a good light to use outdoors at night, the subjects will be no more than 10 feet from the camera.........I am curious how much wattage I would need, I see 40watt lights on ebay and am curious if it would give me enough light so I would not have to use any gain up on the camera?

The important measurement is from the lights to the subject, not the camera.
For some situations, 40,000 watts isn't enough to light a set at night. For ENG situations, a 25-watt lamp can be enough. Get something nice that you can afford.

Light will be on the camera, not a fancy set............shooting a bowfishing segment for my TV show.........most of my footage has been in daylight, so night shooting is new to me.

Thanks for the reply.

If you're able to spend a few hundred dollars on a nice LED light, you'll be glad you did. The VIDLED and the Litepanels Micro both come with endorsements from DVXUser members, and the features you get (regulated voltage, dimmable with minimal color shift, even distribution of light, easy to gel and diffuse, decent battery life, etc.) make it worth it.

I'm working on building my own LED obie light... I'll let you know how it goes!

Let me know how it goes............The shoot is the 20th of Sept. if you get something put together before then I would like to see how you did it.

Thanks
Chris

I don't think 40 watts would be enough for an on camera light being ten feet away. I would go with a bescor 50/100.
