Lighting

I'm new to the DVX and most of what I do is oral histories at a contact's house. I don't really want to scare someone with a lot of equipment and I work alone. Does anyone have any suggestions about some lighting that is reasonably portable (needs to be carried up in the mountains sometime) and probably battery powered too. I've been looking at some LED lights but don't know enough about this to even know where to start.

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

David,

There is a lot you can do with taking advantage of the existing location lighting. Consider which lights to turn on or off, which windows to close the shades/blinds on. Consider where you position your interviewees, and how you position them. Don't be afraid to rearrange things. A lot can be done with white and black foamcore boards used as bounce and flags to control and create contrast. Think about the principles of three-point lighting, but try to implement them with what is there and how you position everything.

One thing to think about is not mixing indoor light with daylight. Think about moving closer to windows and shutting off the indoor lights, or shading the windows and sticking with only the indoor lights.

Thanks so much for the info. Here at the museum I work at I've got a lot of foamcore boards and not much of a budget so this really helps.
