Lighting Nightmares!!!

This is driving me freakin nuts!

I have a JTL lighting kit with 3 soft boxes, each light being 500 watts, 3200K

When I have my lights on and background muslin setup, everything looks great on the monitor. But as soon as I step in front of the camera, it's like it all of a sudden gets very dark on the monitor.

I'm using F1 60i on original dvx 100.

The camera is on manual focus and I get this effect whether I'm in front of a dark background or light one, or even a green screen.

Facts:

I'm black (dark skinned)
And I wear dark colored shirts in the video.

I autowhite balance before I shoot and all the "auto" features are disabled on the camera.

Any ideas on how to fix this would greatly be appreciated.

I get the same results when I use 2 of the lights, or 3 of the lights.

Thanks
Carl

You havee to disable the auto iris, I sold my DVX's so long ago that I don't recall how to do that off the top of my head.

Now that you mention it... I think that auto feature is enabled...I'll disable it when I get to the office tomorrow and try it.

I guess that would make sense...everytime I step in front of that camera it gets very dark, as soon as I move, it gets bright and looks great. I even noticed that when the white side of my hand faces the camera, it goes dark.

I sure hope this fixes it... Thanks so much for the reply, it's really appreciated!

That sounds really strange. Have you tried it with anybody else in front of the camera? I'm light-skinned, but I always test my lighting with my friend, who's darker. It never fails, I get the lighting just perfect for him and then as soon as I step in front of the camera the lighting is too hot on me, so I have to adjust. I have a DVX and I'm using the manual iris more and more. If the iris thing is not the problem, maybe it has something to do with the focus or the lighting. Are you lighting the scene or trying to light you?

yeah that sounds backwards. if your bg is light and you insert a dark skin person with dark clothing, the auto-iris would open rather than close.... should get brighter. either way, auto-iris sucks unless absolutely necessary (run n gun).
