Lighting like the apple videos...

For me, your shot does not have the 'side lighting' effect that the original example that was given has.

For that 'side lighting' setup, the image below is what I keep in my head all the time...

And before you say it... yes, the front facial and upper body are 'far too dark', but that is dealt with by a softbox light over the camera and adjusted as required to give a non-sinister look to the result...

Nice guys!

We are definitely going the route of LED's (have to until we move)... We are almost there with a diffused 650, diffused 500, 300 hair and 2 x 500 watt softboxes on the background. The 2 x diffused 1k's I wanted to bounce of the BG blew the 30amp breaker after 30 sec... Our studio also went from 72 degrees to 85 in a matter of minutes since we cant shoot with the AC on...

So 2 x 1200's lighting the BG and bouncing, a 256 hair light, and 600 softbox should get us close enough taking into account our power limits... We may pick up another 600 softbox for fill or to light the middle of the BG.

This is true, but that's very easy to achieve - most people posting about doing the white-thing have trouble with the overall quality & softness, and are often asking which softbox kit to get. You really need big diffusion, especially with full-body shots.

For that hard "backlit from the sides" look, the twin biax flo's are simply killer. I'm using them for hairlights & rim lighting far more than the usual fresnel & grid setup, the skinny rectangular shpae just rocks for that. I generally wrap them in some white guaze, and I'll often dim them with black mesh - just sort of wrap it around 'em. Fast & super-effective. (And I feel all Roger-Deakins-ish using basic fabrics vs. all my framed diffusion stuff). I've even got some of those plastic flo-light jobs, which are super lightweight - you can hang 'em with a grid clamp from an office ceiling.
