Lighting equipment list -

I'd go with #2.

I can't think of too many instances when you'd need two 6x55s in one shot.

this is just a shot in the dark, but is there a dvxuser discount?

Also, im torn between these two combinations

its either
2 x 6x55watts
1 x 4x55watts

OR

2 x 4x55watts
1 x 6x55watts

My reasons are for practicality, travel, but i understand that with the 6x55, its easy to flip one switch off and get the equivalent as the 4x55.
the 4x55 will be easier to maintain and less cumbersome. But the extra power of the 6x55 would be nice when im competing against light from exteriors, to bring the windows back into the cameras lattitude.
help!

No extra discount on these particular units at this time. They're already about as low as I can make them for now.

I agree with Drew. If portability is a main factor go with the 2 4x55 and 1 6x55. That's still quite a bit of light.

About a week after we ship normally if via UPS Ground. And we'll be shipping middle of next week.

We do seem to have an error with the web interface to UPS right now though. Haven't figured it out yet -- some change probably required in our system that UPS didn't tell us about or some such thing. The error happens when you try to checkout and it goes for the UPS quote it comes back with an error message. The error just popped up right after the first of the year and I've been trying different things on my end and UPS still hasn't figured it out either.

Hopefully it will be ironed out pretty quickly.

I also shy towards daylight lighting rather than tungsten. That's why I've ordered a Cool Lights 150w HMI, to see if it can work as a daylight-colored substitute for tungsten fresnels.

Barry,

Why the shift to daylight vs. tungsten? I assume you mean a shift from 3,200k to 5,600k.

It may put you at one with the outdoors, but creates a whole new issue for mixing with indoor practicals.

Not really, you just have to put a cto on the HMI and you are done. As the output is greater than the tungsten one the loss of light is least than the reverse situation when you gel tugnsten.
And you have more light for less watts which is great wiht the limited household circuits.

Well, thi is at least what I think, for others may be a hassle gelling al the lights.

I think he's saying many times he isn't using practicals in which case total daylight has a lot of benefits. We see most people these days buying 5600K kits. I think its about 70% 5600K and 30% 3200K. Its more a question for some people of whether they need to mix fluorescent or hmi with legacy fixtures like tungsten fresnels or whatever. Many will go 5600K for a total "cool light" interview kit now though.

Green screen work can benefit greatly by using daylight also to light the screen for example. You'll be white balancing to the foreground lighting so the color temperature of the screen is not a problem. You just want it as true green as possible. You can use 3200K in the foreground and not affect the screen in this way.

Green screen. Now there is something i will like to try once my lights are in/

Im not sure i understand Richard. Are you suggesting to try mixing lighting the green screen with daylight, while maintaining tungsten on your subject?

I did try this an it works for me. Just make sure that your talent dosn't het hit by the daylight so there aren't temperature mixes. The cool light gives more punch to the green (this is at least what i noticed in my last greenscreen shoot).

sweet, so ill use my coollights for the background and all my tungsten for lighting the subjects. and then in post i can color correct so that things look right.

sweet!

Ummmm I think in most cases you'll want to use gels and not try to fix an odd problem like that in post!

that shouldnt be too difficult. I figure since the background is being keyed out, the only imporant white balance factor is the subject in the foreground. And if need be, ill slap a Half CTO on the coollights on the screen to bring it closer to tungsten balanced, yet it will be slightly bluer and allow the green to pop more. Might be easier to key too.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

When its time to white balance, white balance to the foreground lighting whatever that may be. The green screen lighting will be green no matter what so don't worry about it. You can even switch it off during white balance to the foreground lighting. Daylight on green just gives a truer green IMHO.

w00t. Can't wait to experiment. It's about time i learn the after effects side of things.

I just received my first 4x55 coollight, and WOW, this thing was packaged beautifully, super super easy to setup and is robust! I am completely impressed with the quality of the build, the ease of use, and the quality of light it produces! I cannot wait for the other two to arrive now. The Eggcrate took me a few minutes to figure out how to properly install it, but once that was finished, its quite easy to go it within a few seconds.

Thank you for all of this Richard, you rock, good sir!

Arrived quicker than we thought! Thanks for the kind words Jonathan. On the packaging, we really learned our lesson on the first generation and now its practically impossible for anything to be damaged in shipment. Just for the record, Jonathan is talking about the new portable plastic fixtures. The CL-455P in particular is what he was setting up there. He's got quite a kit now which includes several other things but I'll let him tell you about it as he's ready. Sounds like some of the boxes aren't there yet.

How'd you set the egg crate up? I can't get it to fit comfortably above the bulbs.

Hi Drew,

Did you get a copy of the PDF instruction manual with the pictures of the setup--I sent it out just before everyone got their fixtures? You put the eggcrate into on of the first slots of the bottom accessory gasket, push down a bit and then push it into the same matching slot of the top accessory gasket. Then secure in place with the velcro straps. It can be a bit tight the first couple of times you do it, then after you get the hang of it, it seems to go in much easier.

I plan to make a video showing the process of this perhaps this weekend and will post in my Vlog.

yes sir i do!

I am now the owner of 2 4x55 banks and 1 6x55 banks. Both arrived VERY quickly. Package is like no other. there is absolutely no way anything can get dinged or damaged during shipping. It is that well packaged.

Very easy to assemble, instructions were e-mailed to me and it took a matter of minutes to put together. The lamps come in this nice padded foam casing which is going to be great for traveling.

I am having trouble taking myself away from these fixtures as i want to use them all the time now.. God do they ever produce nice light... man. They are noiseless, not even a slight humming when i put my ear close by, which surprised me. Richard was great with hi customer service, calling me and leaving messages to see how things were moving along before my parcel arrived.

All in all i was very happy with what i purchased. There were minor glitches such as one of the velcro straps not being on the side of one of the fixtures, but this is easily fixable so i won't fret.

In terms of the Eggcrates, it took me a couple of minutes to figure em out, but like Richard said, give it a couple go's and then it becomes quite easy to mount and unmount.

Thanks again mister cool lights! I will definitely deal with you in the future! All the luck to you my friend.
