Hi. I just bought a DVX100b, Cartoni tripod, Sony lavalier mike and wish to shoot people, in their homes. Should I use the Lowell lights and softboxes that I already have (tungsten balanced) or invest in a florescent tube type lighting that is daylight balanced? By trade, I am a still shooter but am excited about moving into DV. The cooler, daylight balanced lights are attractive to me, such as Wescott "Spider" lights. I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

Hi, I'm Richard with Cool Lights. We have some fluorescent fixtures like those you may be looking for:

In addition, we'll have the softbox and 200w 8U bulb in 3200K and 5600K next month. A kit price for the fixture, bulb and softbox (24 x 24 with grid) will be $125 without stand. $59 extra for a suitable stand.

How much are the bulbs and what's the tungsten equivalent power rating?

I'm looking to shoot a guitar instructional video so I don't need anything fancy. I'

The bulb alone will be $59. Actual wattage is 200w. Output equivalent light will be between 700 and 800 watts. You'll need a mogul base fixture to put it in.

Depending on what lowel lights you have you should be fine. Pick up some CTB gel to match daylight and save up the money for your next big jump in equipment like the HVX, or upgrading to a mole richardson light kit.
