Light Stand with a heavy base

Hey all,

This is a long-shot but I haven't found anything in my searches: anyone know of a light stand with a built-in heavy bottom, almost like it has a built in sand bag?
I work for a non-media company (read: no assistants most of the time) and every once in a while I find myself in a situation where I'm outside in wind with a light on an umbrella and can't bring a sandbag with me.

Thanks!
Dave.

I use this "On-Stage" brand large boom stand for EVERYTHING.

The rolling base is VERY heavy and has wheel locks. This will do EXACTLY what you're talking about.
I frequently use it to put a boom-mic up over an interviewee like a audio boom operator would do and if the people are sitting still it's perfect because this thing goes HIGH up and over.

I also use it "as-is" to mount LED light panels and boom them up and over people for hair/rim lights. There's a simple cheap 1/4"20 screw adapter that screws right on where the microphone clip would go.

Then for heavier lights what I did was take the top two sections from a standard 10-foot light stand ($45) and stick it in the bottom tube of the "On-Stage" base section. Now it's a light stand with a heavy FLAT rolling base.
Although the particular light stand I used was just a tad too skinny so I just wrapped and glued the tube with a folded over piece of that black foil we use to make quick light-blocking snoots and stuff and then it fits perfectly.

Total cost: about $200 and it is a VERY versatile piece of kit.

The black foil you can get from B&H Photo and places like that. I can find a the link for you if you need.

This actually looks really promising! If I can macgyver the wheels with some more heavy duty or larger ones (since I need it to roll on NY streets and some grass), this would be great! I dont even think I need to change the stand on top.

Thank you so much!

You're welcome mate.
i have a lot of great pieces of grip and rigging that I've brought over from the music world.

Please pardon my ignorance, but I can't see much difference in transporting a light stand which has an additional 15 pounds of weight added to the base, as opposed to transporting a normal light stand and a 15 pound sandbag.

+1

A steel Beefy Baby Stand with a Rocky Mountain leg would be my choice. The wide footprint provides stability & the Rocky Mountain leg allows leveling when needed. But I'd still throw a Shot Bag on it.

If you insist on not using a shot/sand bags look at a steel Combo Stand with Rocky Mountain leg.

Totally agree. If anything, a sandbag is more convenient to carry -- as opposed to some awkward, larger, heavier base. I used a Cambo studio stand for a long time in my still photography work; it worked amazingly in a studio. On location, no thanks.
