Light kit for shooting with AF100

I'm looking at upgrading/replacing my old lighting kit. It seems I hear a lot about newer cameras working better with daylight temperature lighting. Is the AF100 likely going to be the same? I'm wondering if I should focus more on daylight temp lights than tungsten.

I asked that question yesterday. I didnt get a definitive answer. Perhaps Barry can chime in, though the AF100 worked well under daylight and tungsten balanced light. Tungstens balanced units were dedo's and kino's.

I think all video looks better under daylight lighting conditions. When you white balance to tungsten you induce grain into the image. It is how all video cameras work. The option are HMI, LED, Flo's and balancing your tungstens.

It's on my list of things to test next time I get an AF100. I do think it's likely that yes, daylight will produce superior results, but until it's tested and verified it remains speculation.

I believe (and I could be mistaken) that daylight balanced lights, being "cooler" than tungsten balanced lights, provide more light in the spectrum needed by the blue channel of the imager. Tungsten lights can starve the sensor of much-needed bluer spectrum of white light, which can lead to noise buildup once you need to manipulate the image (if not immediately).

Some imagers are more sensitive to the lack of blue in the light than others.

UPDATE: Was looking for something with good "pictures" and, of course, the Wikipedia entry on Colour Temperature provides the best examples. Simply looking at the charts related to colour spectrum of various light temperatures shows how clearly lacking in blue-channel information tungsten/3200K light can be. It's here.

Switched to all Kinos 4 years ago, and haven't looked back.

Now that Leo is lurking here on DVXUser, I can point fingers and blame him for talking me in to making that switch.

It's so simple to work with the different color temps of flo tubes. Of course they don't offer the throw of tungsten or other lensed fixtures. I rent HMIs often, and find that flos match well with their color temp.

For a lot of projects I find myself renting Diva Lite 400s, but occasionally I find their style too clinical. Conversely, I like that I don't need a separate soft box and that they don't get too hot!

I do love the bulbs and being able to quickly switch or even combine the bulbs for a half-and-half tungsten/daylight setup.

I had never thought about mixing the bulbs before but a set I rented had been returned that way - I asked why anyone would want to do that and the technician explained a few limited situations where such a thing might be ideal. Used it a couple of times since then!

I have pretty much switched to daylight as well.

My main lights are Gyoury's available direct or from B&H.

They are very light and flexible, I really like their lantern globe.

I also use a few different HDI/HMI lights. Fresnels and open bulb.

And LED's, they run for hrs on my IDX batteries, I use the Ikans for this. Very good value. And they seem rugged. But buy your own IDX or AB plates the Ikans are subpar at least the last ones I got. I sent them back.

But I still keep my tungstens, they come in very handy when you have to add a little light in an interview scene indoors at night. And sometimes just to add a little warmth to a scene mostly lit by daylight.

But 90% of the time I use daylight lighting, I think it is so much cleaner mixing with light coming in through windows etc. Not to mention outdoor use, in conjunction with reflectors etc.

Fluorescents are nice you can mix daylight and tungsten bulbs in the same fixture.

I'll take my chimera soft box's and egg crates with dimmers anyday for my sit-downs thank you very much.

I need tungsten and daylight because every set up is so different. The neatest new light I have is a coolights led 600, small, lightweight, cool, ac or dc, and not expensive. It puts out almost as much light as a diva 400 with not as wide coverage.
