"Light and the Absence of Light"

Great demonstration.

Audio was off, but that was the compression I think. Besides, it was mostly a visual video.

I liked it. Great display of light.

Hey thanks a lot guys....

yeah the assignment of course was not supposed to be about actual light, so this was my take on the assignment..shot, edited, and color corrected, all on friday, it was a fun weekend project.

thanks again, really love the appreciation.

Your shot of the board as he spun it around with his hand really capture the relationship he has with his board. The images of his face also seem to make him recognizable as an individual person yet are shodowy enough to make him anyone. Very nicely done.

I agree I thought this was brilliant. I love your lighting and the small shots of the board and hat etc. when the focus goes soft for second was really nice. It felt to me like a commercial, if it wasnt on this site I'd be expecting a nike tick or some company logo at the end.

Can you share a little bit of your lighting knowledge? Why/how you lit it like you did in certain places?

I really appreciated that.. very simple, but it drives home the point very well. Great editing. Thanks for sharing it.

hey thanks guys so much for all the compliments.... basically i go to an art school and i study digital media... they dont teach traditional film techniques, even though they have the equipment, so i pretty much taught myself how to light and shoot, although this dvx thing is still new to me.... and i am having a massive problem right and hopefully you can help me out with it...

I shot today in 30p. I imported into final cut with the normal setting DV/NTSC 29.97... but the footage looks horrible. heres a screen grab or three:

Notice the pixelation on the edges of everything.... whats the deal with importing progressive guys? how do you import so it looks as clean as interlaced when on final cut.... because the progressive that i imported looks completely fine on an NTSC monitor.... what is the deal? im sick and tired of trying to deal with this stuff...

any help is greatly appreciated..

Nice piece. Good mood music, and your theme is really nicely carried all the way until the end, when you seal it up with the line. Nice.

To answer your question, that's just how it goes with greenscreen. What you're seeing is spill from having your subjects too close to the screen. Unfortunately, with DV color compression, there's not much to be done. Shooting progressive was a good choice; this would look even worse in interlaced. Your best bet is to get a hold of a plugin called dvMatte from dvGarage. It's absolutely the best tool for dealing with this sort of thing. It's fast and, oddly enough, cheap! Used properly, it will take your shot from "looks like crap" to "eh... looks good enough." Just don't expect miracles.

okay so i was wrong, we actually shot 24pA, and the last time i shot 24pA, it wasn't on a green screen, but the picture still looked pixelated like this.... any answers???
