What would be a good estimate for the lifespan of the camera? I read alot about people commenting about "hours". Is it based on how many hours its been used as supposed to how many years it is.

Most of the time, when people comment about hours it is in reference to the DVX or some other tape based camera. This is because there can be, over time, wear on the heads, etc. Cameras that use tape have more moving parts and can be subject to breakdown, etc.

The HVX uses p2 cards (you can record to tape, but most people don't do it) so you don't have the moving parts in there that the tape mechanism contains.

To answer your question: Like most cameras, if you take care of it, it will last you a long, long time. You will probably be upgrading before your camera ever breaks down.

I'm sure my HVX is comparable quality wise to my Sony VX 1000 which I bought new in 1996 . Used for several projects per year, 10 years later, no service or maintenance needed except occasional cleaning cassette. Sold it on Ebay last week and the new owner is happy as a clam.

Your mileage may vary. Constant use would need more maintenance - but all in all, these prosumer camcorders are built to last.

A lot has to do with care. Use the same tape and all that but keep your camera in an air tight quality hard case with a moisture absorbant dealey in there. I use one that has and indicator and turns pink when it has absorbed a certain amount of moisture. then it goes in the oven for a couple of hours to dry it back out, then back in the camera case. If you get fungas in your lens you will be sorry, most other things can be easily fixed.
