G'day. i am faced with a desition. i can buy a DVX100 with hard case and 5 batt's ect for and 959 hrs on the clock for $4000 Australian, or a PDX10 new for $3800. hmmmmm,
I guess my question is, what is the life expecincey for the DVX100?
is 959 hrs on the heads a lot?
i have been looking on the net for a while and can find no indication as to how long they last.

Thanks

Yes i guess it is a lot. I forgot to mention that it is an ex-rental camera. So it has been used and abused so to speek. but i have had a look at it and it is working fine, and i cant see anything wrong with it.

Dose anyone else have a DVX100 with more then 1000 hrs on it?

This is possibly the worst deal I've ever seen on a camera. The price is $3100US.
An ex-rental camera with 1000 hours is on its' last leg. Don't waste your money!!!

$4000AU is $3,110US. if you think it is last legish, then i will not get it i guess. but i want it waaaaaa!
i hope i will find one soon, thanks for your feedback.
I would still be interested to hear how they function after 1000 hrs . . .

That is same price as we pay for new model here after rebates. I know that PAL models overseas cost more, but even so that seems overpriced for such high usage. You need to do more shopping IMHO. There seem to be lots of DVX's with less than 100 hours (or even 20 hours) on them (people who buy them and never really use them).

That is insane. Don't buy a heavily used camera for next to new price. Wow, someone is trying to rip you off. Just buy a new one for that price.

Wow, i was about to email the guy and buy that camera! thanks for your posts everyone, you have just saved me a lot of money!
Where is a good place to find a used DVX100 Pal in Australia? i was looking on ebay for a while, but i dont think i want to rick spending that kind of money there.

Hmmmm, I was just talking to a Tech person at B&H. and he said tha 900+ hrs is "not that much" now i an confused.

I think if you are satisfeid with the general condition of the camera, 950 hrs ...technically is a psoitive thing. All u need is to invest another 700-800 US dollars to get the heads replaced and then you are all set. so factor in that additional money..... and then count the costs.

I don't see why 1000 hrs is that much.
My school rental cam DVX100A has probably around 1500-2000 hrs on them, but they run just as good as my brand new DVX. And of course, the school cams are abused a lot by so many students, but it still runs like new! Those cams go through maintenance once a year though.
The cameras are designed to run tapes over and over again.
I don't think you should be afraid of hours at all. (Unless it's over 5000 hrs maybe?)
But still, I think AUD$4,000 is too much for a used cam.

not saying that it's worth the price but it's not like the camera will suddenly drop dead. if it works fine with 1000hrs, im sure it can go another 1000- as long as you dont drop it.

cool, thanks for all your posts! they have been really good.
I got intouce with Panasonic, and they put me througy to a service place. I talked with a tech dude and ha said that it depends on how often heads have been cleaned and what tapes have been used and such and such, but for a guess, they would last minnimum 3000 Hrs. but with care they could last to over 5000.
Then i said that this camera was a 100, (not the 100a) and he said that was a bit expencive.
So i will continue my search for a used DVX100a.

Thanks agean for all your help

DVX 100a's are at a premium right now. All over the world. Where else can you get so much bang for the buck. I bought mine used with 19 hrs on the heads and it now has 82 hrs, so I cannot attest to longevity, but until competition forces prices to go down, there is no other camera that compares in my humble opinion for the price. Now that JVC has come out with their HD cam, it may force the other manufacturers to produce less expensive models.
Look at the pentium chip for example. Intel had the design for the Pentium 4 many years ago, but instead, introduced pentium 1,2,3 and then four because of money, lots of it. Same thing here.

Yes that is a good point. once a camera with 25P and HD comes into a similure price bracket there will be a big change in price.
I Have descided to buy the DVX100. it will be in my little hands on monday, Ha-Zar for me!

Quick Review. . .

"959 hrs on the heads"
"ex-rental camera... used and abused"
"$3,110US.... i want it waaaaaa!"
"this camera was a 100, (not the 100a) and he said that was a bit expencive."
"I Have descided to buy the DVX100"

you can lead a horse to water. . .

Well in Australia they are a little more hard to come by. I have found an ex-demo 100A being sold by a officeal Panasonic place, and he will only go as low as $4600. (which i dont have)
the cheapest i can get a new DVX100 is $5900. DVX100A are a lot more.
And used ones dont come around here very often. PAL vertions on Ebay are going from 4500 to 5000. I have been watching the market for a few months now.
B&H have a ex-demo PAL DVX100a for 4000, but to get it in to Australia, with tax and posatge it would come out at about 4500.
SO, 4000 is rather good.
