LS-22 supports up to 8.8 lbs. LS-38 supports 17.6lbs. There's also a minimum weight to consider for the LS-38, as it won't pan as smoothly otherwise. The LS-38 has two friction settings while the LS-22 has none. I've used both and own the LS-38 and the different friction settings has been helpful for smoother pan/tilts at times.
What camera do you run on the LS-38?
I am between the LS-22 and the LS-38 as well, but I shoot with a DVX......
I've shot several different configs with the LS-38:
Canon XH-A1/Pana HMC150 stock (5-6lbs). A little too light for the LS-38, pans were difficult to get super smooth.
XH-A1/HMC with Letus/rods/monitor/etc (15 lbs). LS-38 worked like a champ. If balanced correctly, pans/tilts were extremely smooth and little to no drift at the end.
GH-1 on rods/follow focus/mattebox (5 lbs?). Similar results to XH-A1. I found it much more difficult to pan/tilt smoothly. Need to add a few more pounds to the rig.
Yes...yes, yes! If you're ONLY shooting with a stock DVX, Do NOT buy the 38! It's overkill and you're gear is underweight!!!
As James mentioned, you won't be able to use the head for what it's made to do. For DVX only, even with a small mic or light on board, the 22 is perfect! It's a great rig for under 8 pounds. (I have both 22 and 38 and shoot with 200a (same weight appx as DVX) and 7d/5d2 on the 22...when I add adaptors and sound/monitor, I use the 38.)
This isn't only about saving money...it's about functionality tooIt's not about buying a "Better" tripod with the 38, although it does have a couple extras the 22 doesn't (friction setting)...your choice should be made on what is going to work best for ya, IMO

I think the only difference between the T58 and T68 is single or two stage legs...not sure. If that is the case, I'd spend the extra 20-30 bucks for the two stage sticks...a bit more flexible.
