Hi,
Im looking at buying a tripod for my dvx. I like the libec ls-38, i hear the ls-22 is good also, is there much of a difference between them? Is it the ls-38 is designed for heavier cameras? Thanks

I highly recommend it for the price. I adore mine. What camera are you going to put on it though?

yeah the ls38 seems like a fine choice, but i think im gonna choose the ls22 for my dvx though cos i'm strapped for cash, i'm guessing i'll get away with that for the time being

if you get the ls38 now you wont have to worry about getting a better one later. spending less time, less money because you wont have to buy another, and less headache if you have to sell the 22 to get the 38.
I have the 38 and love it. it's nowhere near top of the line but works better then most in the price range its in.

LS-22 supports up to 8.8 lbs. LS-38 supports 17.6lbs. There's also a minimum weight to consider for the LS-38, as it won't pan as smoothly otherwise. The LS-38 has two friction settings while the LS-22 has none. I've used both and own the LS-38 and the different friction settings has been helpful for smoother pan/tilts at times.

What camera do you run on the LS-38?

I am between the LS-22 and the LS-38 as well, but I shoot with a DVX......

I've shot several different configs with the LS-38:

Canon XH-A1/Pana HMC150 stock (5-6lbs). A little too light for the LS-38, pans were difficult to get super smooth.

XH-A1/HMC with Letus/rods/monitor/etc (15 lbs). LS-38 worked like a champ. If balanced correctly, pans/tilts were extremely smooth and little to no drift at the end.

GH-1 on rods/follow focus/mattebox (5 lbs?). Similar results to XH-A1. I found it much more difficult to pan/tilt smoothly. Need to add a few more pounds to the rig.

Yeah I don't think the LS-38 is in my price range or weight range (Stock DVX).

I think I'm going with the LS-22! Any last minute words?

Yes...yes, yes! If you're ONLY shooting with a stock DVX, Do NOT buy the 38! It's overkill and you're gear is underweight!!!

As James mentioned, you won't be able to use the head for what it's made to do. For DVX only, even with a small mic or light on board, the 22 is perfect! It's a great rig for under 8 pounds. (I have both 22 and 38 and shoot with 200a (same weight appx as DVX) and 7d/5d2 on the 22...when I add adaptors and sound/monitor, I use the 38.)

This isn't only about saving money...it's about functionality too;) It's not about buying a "Better" tripod with the 38, although it does have a couple extras the 22 doesn't (friction setting)...your choice should be made on what is going to work best for ya, IMO

Thanks! Yeah since I film snowboarding I won't be shooting with an adapter for my movie project.

Is the H22 as smooth as the H38? Like a stock DVX on the H22 vs. a Stock EX1 on the H38.

I think I'm set on it.

What legs would you recommend, the T58 or T68?

I have the H38. It's really good and I highly recommend it, of course if your camera is in the correct weight range.

However, I have no idea what people talk here about friction setting. AFAIK, mine has no friction setting.

I think the only difference between the T58 and T68 is single or two stage legs...not sure. If that is the case, I'd spend the extra 20-30 bucks for the two stage sticks...a bit more flexible.

How do the legs of the LS22 vs LS38 compare? I am not interested in the heads. I pm'd an owner of a LS-22 setup he recently purchased and he told me that he felt the legs are a bit weak and that the camera may vibrate if shooting in the wind. He went on to tell me that he got his used for $150 but said for $300 he probably would have gone with something else. All I have is a 7D, a 430ex II, and a few lenses. At most I may like to add a motorized glide rail to it but I don't plan on having any crazy cine-rigs attached to it. I'm really just looking for a good tripod that will mainly be used for stills and fixed position video shooting. I don't plan on doing any wild panning or anything. I just want a tripod that will last me a good while for around $300 to $500
