Liability Inurance Costs

Can someone tell me what a typical $1,000,000 general liability police should cost?

I don't know if it's based on the size of our crew, but ours can't get much smaller than it is--2 people. As you probably know, the city permits require this and I'm just starting to insurance shop.

Thanks.

We carry year round production insurance. Our insurance covers equipment, liability (3,000,000.00), and hospitalization amoungst a few of the things. So if someone gets salmonella from craft services, we're covered. We can also go anywhere in North America. Since we also have hundreds of thousands in gear everything together costs about 9k annually.

Apparently though if a terrorist inflicts ebola on our cast and/or crew members, we're not covered for that.

Haha! Funny!

Thanks for the reply. We are a non-profit, part-time operation and just want to get some simple on-the-street interviews in Las Vegas or other metropolitan areas.

I notice you're in B.C., so I will hijack my own post and ask you if the U.S. laws are similar to Canada? We are planning a shoot in Toronto later this month and am really behind the power curve finding out what's required.

Also, do they give you grief crossing the border with some gear? I don't have a lot, it all pretty much fits in an SUV plus the people.

Thanks a bunch!

Has nothing to do with the size of the crew... It's about the amount of coverage. $1mil is rather low by today's standards. 2 to 3 Mil is more likely.
A $1mil annual premium is usually about a couple of thousand dollars. Almost all premiums will be regulated by your state so there probably won't be much variance in the totals. What makes the difference will be the various "fees" the companies will tack on. It also helps to go with a company that understands what you're doing and what you really need. It's amazing how many stupid insurance agents there are out there.
Check out Film Emporium (both NY and LA offices) as a starting place. They understand our business. They also have one-day and even policies just for one production, not to mention "Inland Marine Floaters" just for the equipment coverage.

As I mentioned our policy covers all of North America ie. Canada, USA and Mexico.

Make sure you have all of your equipment registered with customs so you can prove when you go home you had the gear when you originally crossed the border. We have office folks that look after all of that stuff.

Yeah my policy was I think $7,600 for "the standards" as far as liability coverage, automobile, some basic workers comp, etc. That's the annual policy I mean.

I have separate worker's comp on my only employee that's a lot cheaper, but on set worker's comp is expensive.

i am facing this exact issue now. I wonder what it costs in Australia ? I only need liability cover equipment is already covered.

I was quoted by a company based in Vancouver, Canada for a $5,000,000.00 for a three week shoot was about $2000.00 for the premium but this will vary depending on where you film and what exactly the liability is to the insurance carrier.

If you are a non-profit, check out getting insurance through fractured atlas, or something similar:

www.fracturedatlas.org

This is where we're going for our insurance on the feature I'm producing right now. I think they have pretty good rates.
