what's the best mic to get?

:-)

never mind i bet you will sell allot of dpas next year when they will come as it match the 4063 very well .:-)))))))

i don't know... that is a high price tag. i'm sure there will be a few who insist on it though. i'm definitely interested to hear it...

Oh, darnit, you are making me want to get the schoeps shotgun. Everyone had me all convinced to get the sanken. I have been running without a shotgun since I got my CMC6U MK41. I almost never shoot outside though.

they're both fantastic mics, so it's not like you'd be making a bad decision picking one over the other. that 641 combo is fantastic too. still one of the best indoor options.

I wonder which would be better in a tough situation indoors where you needed more reach.

I'd be willing to bet the cs3e is the best shotgun for crossover to indoor use... and yeah, TOP shotguns (not me66 or even 4073a) can be the mic of choice in some interiors!

I tested the Schoeps mk41 side by side with several other mics including c480b/ck63 and I have a really hard time hearing the differences... on axis, off axis, etc... but I still want a Schoeps mk41.

If this were my choice I'd probably get the cs3e just for the reasons that Oleg gives in favor of it... I use that mic a lot in STL and it's a very good tool, but I wouldn't blame somebody for getting the Schoeps gun any more then I'd blame them for getting the Schoeps hyper... even though the price difference in a ck63 and mk41 is more then the $ difference in mk41 and cmit.

Buy what you like and can afford... the thing I agree MOST with in this thread is that you're going to be the only person that ever knows which mic you bought anyway.

Good is good... and great is great... but thinking that your sound will be great just because you bought a great mic is nuts. There's a lot more in it then that... which is why Oleg is pushing the cs3e... the odds of getting sound you want while ignoring the sounds you don't want goes UP with the cs3e... which is why I'd also give it the nod... but get what you want... once you're in the class of great mics it's hard to make a bad choice. If it were me I'd probably get the cs3e... but when it comes time to sell I'll bet the Schoeps retains a higher percentage of the orginal price paid.

Matt,

Ya like you said.. "but I still want a Schoeps mk41"

I was going to go with the AKG hyper like you had suggested, but two factors bugged me.

First was the wait for the European version to get here (and lack of a US warranty) vs. paying so much for the US version (almost $1100).

Second was my suspicion that I would always feel like I would need to upgrade someday or that "what if" feeling. Do you ever get that? I am kind of crazy though.

I can't really get the schoeps shotgun right now, I can't justify it due to the fact that I almost never shoot outdoors and if I do, I have the schoeps mk41 with the BBG and jammer and it works "just fine" for what I am doing (which is mostly b-roll). If I get a shotgun (any shotgun) I need the zepplin too and that is going to be spendy. I have though about picking up a used 416 and a rycote softie (or ktek equivalent). That may be a good interim soloution. I like the idea of having the 416 for V/O work (using the proximity effect to my advantage). I like the idea of having the sanken due to it's unique design that helps in indoor situations. I just like the idea of the schoeps. I just like to say schoeps... schoeps schoeps schoeps schoeps schoeps!!

Oleg,

I mean that I am always fighting the DP for headroom to get the mic close enough. If I could get the mic 4" farther away and still get the same "sound" I would like that, impossible, but that it what I want.

Also, it seems like I keep getting stuck as sound recordist in terrible spaces like big warehouses and echoy linoleum hard wall cavernous spaces where my sanken lavs sound like crap no matter how close I put them and the schoeps is barely adequate if it is miced 14" away. Could you guys get me some new producers and location scouts?

my dear nothing will save you from bad acoustics - not even your love for the logo :-)
by the way - sanken bit a **** everything else to get something useful in situation you describe - but it still sound shity without proper working to swallow the echo

Mike, i see you have an addiction problem , be careful with the dealer sharks as you can see they waiting you in the corner, whispering about grate Hollywood mixers who stand in the line to get the dope :-)
i miss Dave Fisk which was much more gentle then the new one

Oleg,

I am not sure what you mean here..

"by the way - sanken bit a shi* everything else to get something useful in situation you describe -"

Please clarify

BTW

I still really appreciate your help and advice, and I don't doubt your ears
