Hello all. I am about to start filming soon and I was told I needed Liability insurence that covers 1 million dollars. I live in New York City. Does anybody know the going rate for it these days? Also how long is it good for? Is it per day per year? I would like to shoot for a month or so but still am curiouse how long it's good for and the price. Thank you for all information provided.

Wow thanks so much. I hope their cheap. I wish I had a huge budget, i'd splurge. We have no squibs, no blanks all we have is airsoft weapons that are incapable of shooting pellets, we modified it that way. We didint even want city blocks all we want is desrted forests in Staten Island. We even have all our actors sighning contracts that state we or the city will not be held accountable for injuries. I personaly dont even see why we need to pay at all for insurence, but life is a buisness. Thank you so much again.

If you are shooting in a forest, you will probably also have to get a permit from the parks dept. Unless it is private property, then you don't need any of this.

But air soft weapons are illegal in NYC, so I would avoid mentioning those to the mayor's office when you sign up for the permit.

Most liability insurance on our shoots I've seen is either by the day or long-term. They don't seem to care about what you're blowing up as much as who is doing it. If you have true professionals doing stunts, firearms, pyrotechnics, they don't seem to get too excited. This is moviemaking, after all.

I don't know what it goes for but I know my big project right now runs with $5m for the production duration, and we have an itty-bitty budget. We ran with $2m for a week on my last short and I think the cost was in the hundreds.

The city wants to be able to win something if they sue you. That's why they require insurance. There are SO MANY open liabilities that are all really long shots, but they are possible. You could damage property, hurt or kill people, disrupt services, etc. I wouldn't want to be your lawyer if somebody ends up dead from negligence and all you've got is a signed permission slip.

I might disagree, since New York has an awesome film office and NYC has the mayor's office on Film and Theater something or other. www.nylovesfilm.org. Insurance is something you should really have anyway.
New York is a film-friendly state and film-friendly city.

Nice to know NY is nice. The thing we've found when you're using guns, fake or otherwise... Is that it freaks out a Police Dept. Understandably so...They don't know if they're real or not, so when a bypasser calls 911 that there are guys running around the forest with guns (they didn't see your camera), you can be sure there will be an all out response by the SWAT team. I guess that's why you need all this stuff (permits & insurance)!
