Levi's Commercial - DVX100

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

Thanks Elvis. It was alot of fun to do. While I still prefer the film version of this spot, I'm very pleased with the dvx. :)

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

Wow, very impressive, at least at this image-size; how did the comparison hold upon the whole? Broadcast monitor, waveform specs, all that? Looking at it here, it's certainly impressive, and very comprable! I'd love to learn more about the technical aspects.
I had the pleasure of assisting on a similar project, comparing the DVX100 (pre-A version) to Super 16 and 35mm film. Frame grabs cand links to the article in American Cinematographer can be found at Michael Phillips' site: 24p.com . From there, go to Resources, then you'll find: American Cinematographer Article - High resolution Frames which shows some nice images, with great resulkts from the DVX100.

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

hvap,

Unfortunately, we did not have the time needed to do an analysis via a vectorscope or waveform monitor. The film camera used was an ARRI SR3 with Zeiss Super speeds, and acquiring on Kodak's Vision2 7218 stock. We were at an advantage with this stock due to its large UER. We were able to see well into the shadows, as normally video has the edge here. Not only with that sensitivity in the toe, we were able to hold detail much more in the highlights as well.(The obvious weakness of digital) The spots were shot at a 1.3, which led to a 1/2stop or so underexposed DVX footage.

This comparison(for me at least) was to truly see where each format has its strengths and weaknesses. After tweaking with the matrix on the DVX, it was found that we could get approx 2 stops over and 5 stops under key and still hold detail in our image (similar to reversal film). This was with a 1st gen DVX, and I've heard that the latitude is even greater with the "A" model. I think this is a great camera for low budget filmmaking, and if setup properly can produce some amazing footage. I'm definately going to buy one!

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

the only big difference i see is the DOF on the shot when see looks at the jeans on the bed and again the mirrorshot (both nicely composed BTW).
this DOF could maybe have been set up with the DVX also. for a TV-spot i think the DVX could have been used just as good (with some additional tweaking in post). but these spots end up in theatres i guess so 16mm will always win (especially with the SR3 and the stock you used...)

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

As good as most of what you'd see on TV . . . at least at that filesize . . .

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

Hey marcus, looks great. i really enjoyed seeing it compared to film. did u color correct the dvx footage much? it seemed darker then the 16mm footage. I liked your website and other specs as well, good stuff there. have you gotten a paying gig yet? did u also direct any of the spots?

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

Nice commercial. It should go on TV. The DVX aside, as a commercial, it gets it's point across very well.

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

Hi Rich,
Thanks for the kind words. No, I have not done any color correction on the dvx footage. I do know that I can tweak the levels and bring it up some without introducing alot of noise to the image.

As far as paying gigs are concerned, I have not been able to take on any as my school schedule lately has been really crazy.(I'm looking to change that shortly) I did direct the "Add a twist" Absolut spot.

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

Thanks for the info, it's a really nicely shot commercial/spec; and thanks for posting it.

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

The 16mm looked much nicer, imo, but I also think the dvx footage was underexposed. It's a good commercial either way, but 16mm definitely wins by a long shot. By placing things further apart, then zooming in all the way, flooding the room with light, and using ND filters until you can keep the iris entirely open, you can get DOF with the DVX, but honestly--that's a lot of work for a little more DOF.

Still, I'll take a dvx over anything in the same price range, and I believe an sdx900 would be able to deliver footage almost exactly as good as the 16mm film.

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

Policar,

I totally agree about the sdx900. That camera delivers some amazing footage. While doing the dvx to film comparison, I also shot with an sdx.

If interested, you can see the sdx spot at my site in the portfolio section under "Absolut".(www.marcushoffman.net)

You are right about the dvx footage being underexposed. In my earlier posting I had mentioned that the 16mm was shot at a 1.3, and while in tandem trying to achieve a shallow DOF on the dvx, the footage was underexposed.

If only the dvx shot dvcpro50! But for the price, I agree the dvx is an amazing camera that if setup right, and with good lighting can produce great images.

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

Both versions looked good. The 16mm looked better, but the other one had better music. The dvx stands up fairly well.

Re: Levi's Commercial - DVX100

Very nice Marcus! Both versions were pretty nice but of course the 16mm version is better. It's kinda like comparing a moped to a motorcycle. I like it. Who is the cute girl? She's very pretty! Are you going hook me up? ;)
