Letus35 Ultimate Sneak Peek

Still at 4500.00 and relay still at 4500.00. Could change (probably won't) in the next few days or so. But after this past weekend I already see that the market for it is there and they've got it.

At Cinegear the amount of people asking if they could buy the unit right there on the spot was insane. =P I even got an offer for my beta unit. Shhhh don't tell anyone.

I said no, naturally.

Looks good. Like the finish and materials choice. Hope it comes in black as well. Heres some Q's:

-How good is the production lens mount?
-How well does the unit mount to the camera?
-Does the "collimation on the fly" system have a markable area for repeat settings (different lenses, ect)
-What is the adjustment range for the motor?

Is there a release date for the unit yet?

Lots of people interested in black, I believe they're paying attention though so let's all see.

1) PL mount you mean? The Positive Lock mount is sturdy and easy to use. Between RR and Letus I haven't run into a bad PL mount, I suspect because they cost so much. The Letus Ultimate comes with a PL mount as well (I think they're stll on target with that).

2) The Unit is very sturdy, just as solid as the extreme. Between the Extreme and Ultmate mounting to any camera should be the same.

3) The Collimation ring does not have a markable area, although that might have been a nice addition. I think the reason it doesn't is because you may have to do two full rotations for one lens mount and then just one for another. This is probably something you can get little stickers for anyway. That's what I had planned to do, just haven't gotten around to it.

4) Incremental from 1 - 99. I find myself sitting at 70 and using 99 only when large sky shots are present. Even then it's not necessary, but a safety measure.

As far as a hardlined release date I kept hearing this week at Cinegear, I think it will be more around next week. Either way, keep your eye out on Adapterplace.com, Letus35, and Zacuto because they're going to go fast. For a solid targeted release date please speak to Aaron (DeGrey) or email the boys over at Letus.

Thanks for your typical fast response.

I was referring to the Nikon/EOS mounts. They tend to be rather disappointing. Glad to hear about the motor abilities. Im sure a marking system can be easily adapted for the collimation by the user. Hope I can snatch one before they're gone. I was originally planning to use an SG for some In-flight corporate footage coming up in July, but with the Ultimate's variable motor, pure sky/cloud shots are a better reality (particularly at high shutters).

Oh, sorry about that avenger. I've been using the new Nikon Locking mount and the new Contax Yashica mounts with pure success. I wouldn't doubt that they're completely up to snuff.

I was referring to the Nikon/EOS mounts......

The mounts of cinema lenses and cameras are far better than standard photo-gear because some of the lenses are very heavy (Tele or Anamorphic) - so the mount must be very good. PL Mount is absolutely perfect but we should not compare peanuts with coconuts :-)

Likewise, with the advent of SLR gear being used commonly in more and more indies\commercial work the need for more robust PL based quality mounts arises. My question was focused on whether the Ultimate has a Canon SLR type quality to their EOS mount or something more similar to the aftermarket (current adapter) crowd. The qualities are drastically different and can make tremendous differences on set. I think Kholi answered it though.
