Letus Ultimate/ EX1 shorts

Sorry if I am a little bit slow but, how do I download from XR? I made an account and signed in but I don't see anywhere to download? Is it a quicktime? I'd love to see something less compressed even if it is 200+mb. The streams looked good from what I saw. I'll reserve further comments for a higher rez version.

edit: Just finished watching again on the vimeo version. Is that shot clean? If not, what did you alter in camera? Some of it reminds me a little of Kodak 7285. The vimeo still doesn't look sharp to me. Sort of soft 16mm look to some parts. A great style but not what I was expecting. Vignetting and low light seem to be superb. I'd love to see a redrock on the streets trying to record images like that. Any chance of uploading footage where you "ramp" the ground glass speed in realtime so that we may see how the image alters? Also, do you happen to have a situation that is more narrative based that you could test it out in; perhaps tight rooms in a house with low light on wide glass. Thanks as usual for your willingness to share these tests and taking the efforts towards reviewing the gear.

the grading is very strong as I wanted a kind of retro feel to it. The next two you will really see that astonishing clarity of the ground glass.

Those stills, man. Please, just post the footage raw no stylistic grading just so we can see the natural quality of the video. Those stills look really nice.

the film has PERFECT Edge to Edge sharpness... i wish i could have seen it without all the color grading. Is there any chance you could upload some RAW stills?

Other than that you had some sweet camera positions to capture all the colored lights.

Looks good, Philip. I was hoping to run into you at NAB, but at least I was able to meet Hien.

I feel the color grading in this last one didn't quite do vegas justice (granted I just finished reading the 21 article in American Cinematographer), but the moments you captured (women watching dancers, kissing couple, etc.) were choice.

I hope I can say this, without making an argument. Although the footage looked very nice, I just don't believe with it's $4k nice. Only an opinion.

I think you're free to say whatever you want, Car3o. I think the compression doesn't do it justice, and might end up stamping the wrong impression into everyone's mind.

The Redrock Canyon stuff looks like it's gonna be killer, which is why I voted for uncorrected straight-from camera stuff. Or, at least, something closer to showing we who can't touch the adapter what it's capable of in it's purest form and at with better compression. However, perhaps we can't ask too much, Phillip's always been generous in sharing his footages with the community.

Also considerin' that everyone's on Pins and Needles waiting for some Ultimate footage, that's hard to live up to! Expectations and all. =P

Hey guys you even make me, to count the euro/dollar exchange rate to buy one for my Varicam… Phil nice shooting!

Unfortunately, the high resolution redrock shot, has evident edge softness, as it was expected, since spinners cant have a Plano convex correction on the ground glass… so its not better of what I already have… the stop down thing, its already a history for me… so my dream of having the perfect ground glass adapter for my Varicam has just vaporized… too sad.

But still is a good try.

I m continuing my research of ground glass material. And also waiting to see how Ultimate is behaving together with B4 Letus relay, since I thing they have a room to fix the edge sharpness with the lens design.

Hey Evangelos, don't judge a product by just one person using it. I can't see what you are seeing mind!

There is a quicktime version now on the same link, much nicer than the embed flash

I don't think it has anything to do with the Ultimate, personally, and it's actually the fact that there's SLR glass in play here. Ought to consider that, as the adapter can't make-up for what an SLR Lens can't deliver on.

But, I suppose we should wait and see when someone posts up footage from PL lenses or at least a 17-35mm ED.

hey philip, watched your review of the ex3 on vimeo. was wondering if you got a chance to do some test shoots with it to see if it still has a rolling shutter issue.

Phillip,

Did you notice any flicker at 24fps on flares?

I can't quite tell from your short.

Redrocks will flicker with a flair EX's don't but their flairs are not as cinematic..
I don't know if the flicker is a spinning glass only issue???

I was wondering if the rpm adjust took care of the flicker issue with flairs.

Thanks for posting the footage.

The new adapter seems to clear up all my gripes with the EX...even though they are few.

Much better example with MUCH better compression. Ground glass artifacts are non-existent and the sucker's sharp, man.

Thanks for throwin' up some more footage, Phillip! Takes time to cut and score this stuff, much appreciated.

Nice work Phil! Beautiful crustal clear images. I've been to Red Rock Canyon many times and you captured the spirit of the place. And always thank you for sharing your work. That Ultimate is a mighty fine adapter.

If you're ever in the City of Brotherly Love, I got a cheese steak with your name on it! If you ever do a shoot out here, PM me, I'd love to tag along.

Cheers!

Will do! I spent 4 hours there Friday night waiting for my connection!

Hey Phil,

Interesting to see how you interpreted your experience in Vegas. One thing in particular that I like about your films is the people you feature. They are posed yet candid at the same time and it keeps the actual physical place from becoming too generic. The Vegas piece is a good representation of the variety of people found there at any given time.

I have to say I'm not a big fan of your color palette and I found some of this piece to be almost distracting because of it. Some of my reaction could be that I just got back from Vegas myself and the colors in your film didn't represent what I saw there. Of course it doesn't have to but I am not a fan of Magic Bullet in general...great as a starting point but I don't care for their presets.

The use of the Letus always brings out a beauty that just cannot be captured using the native lens and you used it well in this film. I shot some footage at Vegas myself and there were many times I wished I had brought my Letus.

I wasn't crazy about the music choice but I have to say it worked well in the piece, particularly in the way it brought out a melancholic feeling enhanced by your choice of slow motion.

Overall nice job.

Hey philip the videos are great. I like vegas the most. The canyon shot is just too static for me. I wanted to ask about the music you used for the movies.
Did you get permission from the artists themselves or did you just mention the song/artists in the credits section ? Is that enough legally speaking ? I want to illustrate some things i shot with some music and i don't want to get arrested or something...:nads:
Once again great work!

Hi phillip, was this shot in 24p, because It looked alot like video. Can anyone comment on why the ex1s motion has such a videoish look to it? the images themselves look amazing though, just not filmic enough for me, and I honestly think the old letus ex gave your ex1 a slightly more filmic and organic look.
