Letus Ultimate/ EX1 shorts

philip bloom

Veteran
I have made my first short using the Letus Ultimate prototype and the EX1.

There is a better quality version being uploaded to exposureroom.com right now but in the mean time here it is:

http://www.philipbloom.co.uk/Philip_Bloom/Deer_Vegas.html

a semi sequel to Piccadilly Furs

More info and photos on my blog if interested.

There are three more to edit. Two with the Ultimate from the Grand Canyon and Red Rock Canyon and the third using the Extreme at Death Valley

The Red Rock one is probably the best looking one for the Ultimate, more time than we had in the Grand Canyon. I shall edit it soon.

I loved the content. Vegas sure has a lot of interesting people and things. :D

Now as for the images. I wasn't impressed. I'm not a big fan of the EX1 image to be honest. I'd like to see images produced by the Ultimate with an HVX, preferably HVX200a.

what did you see that you didn't like? quite an astonishing comment to be honest and I would bet a lot of money you are commenting on the compressed exposureroom flash not the downloadable HD version available there.

Saying you dont like image quality from a flash embed is quite strange. Surely you understand that?

My comment had nothing to do with the compression. I don't like the image that the EX1 produces. For a lack of better words, it looks very "video."

so you are commenting generally rather than from this short, Correct? Have you downloaded the HD one?

You are entitled to your opinion but PLEASE do not make this an HVX vs EX1 thread. We are all bored of them. Thanks Zander.

Phil

You have some cool shots. I especially like the plastic guy blowing bubbles with his butt... then you cut to the shot with some unsuspecting peeps sitting and talking while the bubbles float behind them. Subtle and cool cut.

glad you spotted that!

Vimeo version is up in about 25 minutes. I think that one might look better for compression.

Is ExposureRoom a new site?

the embeds on exposureroom look better than vimeo, but i still prefer the on site video of vimeo.

exposureroom is a new kid on the block, lots of cool features.

I'm not trying to make this into a HVX vs. EX1 thread. That's the last thing I want to do. Like you said we have enough. I simply would like to see the ultimate on the HVX because that is my camera of choice.

i sold my hvx last year so not my chance of me putting in on there

that vimeo link is up now and looking great by the way chaps.

Sorry if I am a little bit slow but, how do I download from XR? I made an account and signed in but I don't see anywhere to download? Is it a quicktime? I'd love to see something less compressed even if it is 200+mb. The streams looked good from what I saw. I'll reserve further comments for a higher rez version.

edit: Just finished watching again on the vimeo version. Is that shot clean? If not, what did you alter in camera? Some of it reminds me a little of Kodak 7285. The vimeo still doesn't look sharp to me. Sort of soft 16mm look to some parts. A great style but not what I was expecting. Vignetting and low light seem to be superb. I'd love to see a redrock on the streets trying to record images like that. Any chance of uploading footage where you "ramp" the ground glass speed in realtime so that we may see how the image alters? Also, do you happen to have a situation that is more narrative based that you could test it out in; perhaps tight rooms in a house with low light on wide glass. Thanks as usual for your willingness to share these tests and taking the efforts towards reviewing the gear.

Phil, can I call you Phil? Yeah...you probably work for Sony and Letus as well as the Las Vegas tourist commission...so i'm not going to be impressed with this stuff;). Just kidding, it looks awesome makes me want an ex so bad. Now while it looks great, I have to ask what do you find to be the most glaring difference between the Ultmate and the extreme as its hard to tell even over vimeo. I can see the bokeh smear is gone, but the compression i'm sure is not doing it justice. Is it worth the extra 3k (for the working DP)?

yep. you will see in the next two shorts. you can stop down to f22 AND have high shutter in. There are no things to avoid with the Ultimate. I doubt I will get work with the Las Vegas tourist commission, i did dwell on the seedy aspects and not ignore them!

thanks by the way!
