Letus or No Letus for Green Screen Shoot?

The pilot I'm talking about is going to be shown to a major TV channel here in france next week, so I'll probably might put it here also so you can see our various 3D backgrounds and final integration.

Phil - Detail down eh...The EX1 is very sharp - can you please recommend the camera settings to optimise the key, if you happen to know them off hand, cheers!

Dean - I wouldn't mind doing it projection like but I've never used one of them before so wouldn't really know what I'm doing to be honest!

Andrew, detail down on the EX is something i found out about after it was too late, small lines in fabric, etc go crazy. So turn the detail off on the picture profile settings, you can play with the curves and color saturation so the key pops more, just make sure you don't bring green into the black areas. I will try and see if i still have the old settings stored on sxs card or back up.
Cheers

Andrew stick to what you feel most comfortable with. Your example looks very convincing and has a nice look so I wouldn't over worry yourself. There is a slight darkening of the edge, if you could lift it a little it might help a touch but I'm being really, really picky.

Is your client happy with your key? If so, then get on with it and stop worrying! One thing you could do to help marry the comp is to add "float" to the composite. On the comp, push in a little and drift the camera like it's following the action (plus a touch of roll too). It helps trick the eye so it's not concentrating on the edges.

Cheers mon ami!

Haven't done mine yet Dean, shoot is the 26th. I think the example you talked about is probably someone elses!

Oh and btw b/c this is low budget I've decide to change tack a little and take a very knowing approach to the video (rather than aiming too far ahead of my experience etc).

Originally I wanted a lovely filmic green screen shoot, but quickly have realised it's not going to happen because of budget/lack of experience etc, hence the somewhat ghetto approach.

Instead I'm going to make it more weird, so I've enlisted an illustrator friend and together we're going to create some 'frames' for the image, for example it takes place in some creepy woods so I'm going to get her to draw a scene that will frame the image, on card or something. Then I'll articulate the arms and various other points in the scene and shoot that seperate on GS (stop motion) to give some movement to this frame, which will look totally weird.

I'll also jazz it up in keeping with the real action - for example there's a villain in it and basically when he's being evil the creatures of the wood (people in costume!) are gonna have red eyes and all this weird stuff. So I thought I'll turn the 'eyes' of the trees framing the sides red too and this kind of thing.

From a Z axis space it'll be like this:

Near
--
Framing
--
2d video (GS work)
--
Comped background
--
Far

This will give it a weird film cum play look, so when I do the comping it won't look too 'fake' it'll just look like part of the look, like a fair ground ride or something maybe.

Another example, I have the actors moving through the woods. Well I can't afford fancy sets so instead I'm going to get them to move on the spot as if walking and I'll shoot the backgrounds with movement, so rather than them moving through a static background, the background will move around them, who are rooted to the spot - again all shot human stop motion to give a weird jerky look.

As I said it'll be pretty weird but I feel it's a case of learn to love the low budget and create something interesting within that sphere, or go for something I realistically can't achieve which is a high quality all guns blazing affair.

(Not sure why this is reminding me of brilliant mid 80's british show knightmare - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmUe4VrTzvk heh)

Oh and I just had another idea. Since I'm comping in real filming of woods as backgrounds, why not take my DSLR to the woods and frame up the image exactly how I shot them by getting a model to sit in place then nick off out the frame when I shoot, giving me the right perspectives of the backgrounds per shot.

Dean,

Can you elaborate on this technique? I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I'm always looking to add to my bag of tricks.

Yep sorry Andrew I was looking at Normalz clip with the french fella, got a bit confused.

Mvansomeren, sure. If you're compositing two elements A over B and there's a slight misregistration ie the two clips aren't quite locked together if you rotate and drift the composite a little (like the shot's hand held) then it tricks the eye into thinking the clips are better married together as your eye is taking in the larger movement of the camera pan / tilt etc. Really helps if you're tracking something into a shot too.

Cheers

Whoa Dean, thats why they keep paying u the big bucks ! Great trick indeed, do you have many more VFX shots planned for Golden, after the opening i would guess there's a mega climax, no doubt!
Can't Wait!

It's my shoot tomorrow, woo!

Just quick check before it's too late - I need to turn detail OFF in the Picture profile settings - i.e. off and not say, on but -25 or something.

Cheers!

There are so many things that are important for a good green screen shot - lighting of subject, lighting of background, perspective matching andwhatnot - having an adapter or not does make little difference.

When I shoot with adapter, I try to use the adapter on the green screen shot too to keep the texture and look. And I pulled great keys from bad lit scenes with greenscreen flagging in the wind with crinkles and all. Even thou I used an adapter it was possible.

An adapter is not the limiting factor in this game.
