letus extreme on the glidecam

Just wanted to know if anyone out there knows if it is possible to setup a letus extreme, on rails to a glidecam and how exactly does one go about this?

( i wonder due to the new proportions, if the quick release plate which would attach the camera to the glidecam can be placed far enough to center the new division of weight with the adapter and lens attachment )

Papa, you are going to be dealing with a lot of weight. There's no way you could handhold this and the Glidecam may not be the way to go if the payload is too much.

mikkowilson, I think whenever we're talking about the Extreme + rig on Jib/Cranes or stabilizers like Glidecam, it's got to be wide angle lenses (24mmm-28mmm) with the proper distance to the subject field of view so focusing is not an issue.

Anyway, that's my newbie take on this.

The weight and the distribution thereof are more of an issue when wide angle lenses are used with proper focal distance.

as tibobjerome has said, i will be maintaining subject to camera distances when i use the glidecam for any type of shot, crane as well. I will be doing it the same way i have been using my friends 4000 pro with the brevis.

With the 24mm, stopped down to 2.8, or left at 2, i focus between 10 and ininity and i am happy with what i get. or if im following a subject more closely, i keep it at 5 feet and keep the distance relatively close from beginning to end of shot.

i just dont want this subject to stray into another question, lets keep the focus on this particular setup please :)

How much does the Extreme weigh? I think you'll be greatly pressed with weight.

A 35mm adapter is normally a lot for even the Flyer to fly!

I flew A HVX with a Mini35 & 35mm and 12mm glass today ... It overlaoded the Flyer and I had to use my G-50 arm!

No way you could really ever handhold a 35mm adapter setup for any amount of time and still have control of the shot.

it would be the canon XH A1, with the letus extreme, 24mm lens, rails, no follow focus. very bare, i may add rails later on but they are very light.

we have had no problems using the canon XH A1, with cavision rails, the brevis and a 35mm lens. balance is just right, and arm spring supports it, and based on the setup, it seemed as though we could probably get another pound on top before it gets to its max.

so anyways, should someone try it, please let me know how it works out .

Papa, I'd had the same rig as you when using Stabilizers and Cranes. There's no need for FollowFocus and we would have to deal with lens/light flares without matte Box that would add to the overall weight. (We can deal with that in post production)

The XH-A1 weighs less than 5lbs, the Extreme weighs 3lbs, the lens plus the rods and the base plate(s) will probably add 1lb. The whole set should thus weigh about or less than 9lbs.

As an FYI, the Canon XL2 weighs about 8lbs and those stabilizers (such as the Glidecam) are advertised with it.

But I would advise to use body & shoulder pads set ups. That's the way I tried it and it works even though I worry too much. I guess it's more in the mind.

wait, those weights are slightly off.

the camera is 5 pounds
adapter is 3 pounds
rails are about a pound
a lens is also a pound - 1.5 lbs
all in all comes out , with the quick release plates and so on, to about 11 pounds. which is a pound over the suggest weight limit, but i think it could be dooable :)

oh, and we use the smooth shooter. so no worries about the arm.

That's a shitty way of not having to maintain focus. Sorry, I had to say it. This is the number one problem EVERYONE who owns a 35mm adapter will run into, and the single biggest item that will make your footage look like amateur crap. Unless you are bolted to a tripod and no one moves.

Focus is the most important thing with these rigs. Maintaining subject to camera distance is easier said than done. We all seriously need a decent wireless follow focus. You heard it here first.

I've shot before with the DVX and the Letus35FE on a glidecam 4000. No rails and no Extreme, but a similar setup. Yes your arm is burning after the 6th take (heavy).
The GG was super dirty in this video. I just shot the thing with my gear for a classmate in college.
