Letus Ex / DVX Combo

Like many people, I've been debating on which adapter is right for my needs for some time. I know pretty much what there is to know about each one, and I won't retread the steps of many past threads by asking 'which is the best', because if one thing has been proven without a shadow of a doubt, there is no correct answer to that question. In fact, what is clear is that the quality of the footage obtained from each adapter is directly proportional to the ability of its operator, and less to do with the quality of the adapter, as all options seem to generate fantastic results when properly used. Now, having said that, I think we can all agree that certain adapter/camera combos work really well together, and others seem to have some issues. For example: the sgpro/A1 combo and the letus/ex combo seem to generate superb results in general from what I've seen.

Now, I don't post here often, but I do read. And in my search for an adapter to fit my needs, I've read a lot of posts and looked at a lot of footage and I've mainly narrowed my search to either the sgpro and the letus. I use a dvx, which, I daresay is a bit archaic these days in the light of the newer fancy hd cams, but, what can I say, I'm poor (PAs make bugger all). I've seen quite a few videos of the sgpro/dvx combo which seems to yield great results, however, I've seen very little dvx/letus extreme footage to compare it to, and what I have seen has been mostly rubbish (though I'm fairly convinced they weren't great examples of what the combo could be capable of). I plan to eventually upgrade my camera of course, but for the time being, I'm hoping to find something that works great with the dvx within the confines of sd, and will eventually work well for a higher end camera when I make that jump.

Obviously there are a lot of considerations to take in to account, and the decision is mine, but my basic question (after this long-winded introduction) is I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the letus ex/dvx combo, or can point me in the direction of footage and/or grabs, or information regarding it? It would help immensely.

I apologize if this has been covered, my search yielded little information.

cheers.

I too was wondering the same question. Try searching youtube for some letus dvx footage I have seen some good stuff on there, however I don't know if it was the extreme or not. The general concensus on here seems to be that the perfect adapter would be a mix between the letus ex and the sgpro. Because the extreme has the best light loss at .5 stops but the sgpro has the spinning GG as opposed to vibrating which apperently causes issues. I personally don't know I don't own either and I am in the same boat as you as I am looking to pick up an adapter but an torn between the letus and the sg.

Has no one ever connected a letus extreme to a dvx? Good lord, maybe I'll have to be the first. I hope the universe doesn't implode or something.

both adapters will work extremely well on the dvx. i would push for the letus extreme because i own one and it works fantastically, but on the other hand, the sgpro allows for many more shutter speeds and lens F stops.

Just have to get a flip module for the sgpro..

It is really up to you. Letus comes in one package and is small, sgpro is a little bit larger.

Letus all the way around. There were a number of booths at NAB using the Letus adapters on cameras. I was actually surprised as to how many. Didn't see any SGPros / Brevis or Redrock units on anything (Redrock only in Redrock booth) but again, I didn't walk by EVERY booth. Letus really has the hands up IMO and what they're showing as the Ulitimate, which I think could also spawn a "lite" version much like the Extreme, was nothing short of amazing. I don't think you could go wrong with a Letus adapter in anyway. I've got nothing against the other guys, I just think Letus are the guys to beat at this point.

got a DVX and LEX and I love it. picture is sharp, great DoF. I highly recommand this combination.

but then again, the LEX is my first adapter.

IMO you cant go wrong with it.

Thinking about the LEX

Thinking about the LEX

Is this supposed to mean that you can adjust the aperture on the still lenses with the LEX? That doesn't make any sense? What do you mean by more shutter speeds and lens f stops?

Secondly, do you have to set the dvx to f4 to get the best picture, cause I could imagine that becoming a serious problem for light loss.

Yes, aperture is adjusted on the manual lenses attached to your adapter, rather than on the camera itself. Take the DVX and leave it wide open. Adjust f-stop on your manual lens.

What PaPa is referring to is one of the benefits of spinning ground glass as opposed to vibrating. SGPro is spinning / Letus is vibrating. On the vibrating adapters, slower f-stops and faster shutter speeds will show the grain patterns in the ground glass. This prevents you from stopping down in most cases past f/5 - f/5.6 on the vibrating adapters or using shutter speeds 1/100 or faster. It's not a huge drawback, but can be a pain when shooting skies or really bright exteriors unless you're decked out with ND filters.

Everything Cheno says is true. Basically, you set the 35mm lens for the depth of field you want and set the dvx for the exposure.

I appreciate the responses guys. Looks like I have more thinking to do. I just wish I knew what both companies had up their sleeves for the near future. The sgblade is of course intriguing, yet somewhat mysterious. And this idea of a possibly compact, less expensive 'lite' letus ultimate definitely has me hoping.

It may not be the best time to buy.

Thanks, and judging by all the info from NAB. It doesn't sound like they are getting rid of the LEX anytime soon. I think it's what im going to go with. Alot of the Sg footage I have seen has a lot of vignetting and has quite the dream like softness.
