Letus Economy Grain?!

Hello All

I purchased a Letus Economy a while back. I used it for one shoot and found there was a lot of grain in the video. We discontinued using it for that production. It has sat in a box since. Today I had the opportunity to play with it for a long time. I can see tons of grain as I pan the camera. It is especially visible in darker areas of an image. I have never used, nor do I even know anyone else with a 35 adapter. So I have nothing to compare this to. The grain is a real killer though. It is definetly coming from the GG. Ive tried every focusing combo possible and cannot get rid of it. I even tried to enhance the Vibration of the spinning motor by adding a little piece of tape (to add weight to one side) to the odd side of the out-of-round spinning metal wheel that causes it to vibrate. It helped smooth out the grain a little but not enough.

Is this Normal with Adapters in general?.

The Moire Effect it gives is not desirable, at all.

I know this may be hard to answer without a pic or something, any input would be appreciated. The Economy looks to be very well made and thought out. I was very surprised to see this. I had written Letus about it a while back but have not heard from them to date. I know that is not normal. They were wonderful in getting this to me in an extreme rush as well as answering all my questions at the time, maybe the email was overlooked.

What was the fstop on your 35mm lens? You may not be able to stop down past f5.6 before the gg becomes visible on this adapter.

I'm surprised you didn't hear back from Letus as they are very responscible about customer service. It's easy for email to get lost, caught in spam filters etc.

I agree the most likely cause of this is too small an fstop on the 35mm lens. Does opening that help. You want to control exposure at the video camera more than the 35mm f stop. This is a problem with all adapters but especially those that vibrate.

Wow, Thanks for the generous response! I am shooting on an HVX. Actually I have two, One Grey market and one US.

REgarding Letus not responding: Im sure My mail got lost somewhere, I have nothing but respect for them. I will write again. they went to some pretty nasty extremes to help me out. So there is no anger or dis=satisfaction on my part. I do have some other things I need to address as well. There is a finger print on the inside of one of the lenses as well as some Residue from a cleaning agent or whatever they use. Im not worried, I am confident they will take care of it once we hook up. They were so Nice to me when I purchased this. Honestly, their concern for my satisfaction was impeccable. they made a walmart greeter look like the wicked witch of the west.

Regarding the Grain and all the settings. I will admit, I may be one of those people that purchased this without understanding what I was buying completely. I saw the beautiful DOF folks were getting and wanted a piece of that pie. However, as I read through the forum tonight, Im seeing much discussion on grain. Some of my settings may be enhancing this a bit and I think some of this is par for the course. I am picky, and with nothing else to judge by. It is hard to understand just how much I should expect.

I love the adapter, but the grain makes me nervous for paid clients until I understand what makes it tick a little more. I was shooting wide open and toggling between Cine-d and V. One produces substantially more grain. Or I should say, it enhances what is there more. I think I need to delve into this a lot more.

Any advise or tips is greatly appreciated. I have a Nikon and a canon 50mm, as well as a Nikor 28-7-mm. The Nikor definetly stops it down a bit and produces more of this effect.

Make sure you have the image stabilization turned off! That'll freeze grain like a mother.

The next thing to do is test. With the amount of variables at play it's up to you to start eliminating them. I don't mean to sound harsh. Let us know how you go.
