Is the dvx's letterbox really 1.76 to 1? It seems more 1.66 to 1. I have heard things about hacks that make the letterbox mode 1.85 to 1, is this true?

No hacks I'm aware of. Certainly nothing that wouldn't involve cracking the case, and I don't think you want to go down that road, right?
My advice -- forget the letterbox mode entirely. Shoot full frame and crop it however you want in post. If you plan to do anything involving color-correction or various other FX, you're going to end up cropping off the black bars anyway. Better to give yourself a little leeway in framing.

This method works fantastic. When you see his sample clip check out the other ones. Then pick your jaw up off the floor and get to doing your own jaw droppers!
