i recently shot a short film on my dvx in letterbox, framing shots knowing that in post i'd have a little bit of room to add thicker bars (i dont like the look of skinny bars) i will edit as though i've shot in 4:3. am i right in assuming this? also i shot the film at 1/50 shutter spead, am i in good shape here? last question is are
film-outs worth the money?

If you shot 4:3 with LETTERBOX enabled, then yes you edit in a 4:3 timeline. You can certainly add a tighter letterbox in post if you like, but you can't get back anything after you shot, the black bars are burned into your footage.

Usually you only do a filmout if you have to. If you get accepted to Cannes, for instance, they only screen on film, so you'd need a filmout. Other than that, most film festivals accept video for consideration and for screening, so it's rarely a necessity.
